PUNXSUTAWNEY — The Punxsy junior tandem of Daniel Triponey and Logan Weaver combined for 40 points during the Chucks' 61-48 triumph over Clarion during the first day of the 16th-annual Carl A. Truance Holiday Classic Wednesday night in Punxsutawney.

Triponey led with a game-high 23 points, and Weaver followed with 17 points, as the Chucks returned to the tournament's championship game after missing out last year.

Punxsy will face Marion Center at 7:45 p.m. tonight with the title on the line. Marion Center is coming off a 61-42 victory over Redbank Valley earlier Wednesday.

Clarion faces Redbank at 3 p.m. today in the boys' consolation game.

Triponey and Weaver were two of seven Chucks who scored Wednesday. Alex Fedigan followed with five points, both Jordan Mesoraco and Luke Janocha added four, and Corban Cressley hit a three-pointer.

Punxsy (3-2) scored the first nine points of the game, and the Chucks were constantly ahead by nine points or more for most of the contest. Triponey scored nine first-quarter points, and Punxsy was ahead 20-9 after one quarter.

Clarion (2-3) could never come closer than an eight-point deficit during the second quarter, as Punxsy's lead ballooned to 13 at one point. By halftime, Triponey had 13 points, and the Chucks were ahead 31-21.

Weaver broke out during the third quarter, scoring half of his team's 14 points. By the time the fourth quarter started, both Triponey and Weaver were in double figures, and Punxsy was up 45-33.

The Bobcats started the final quarter on a 10-3 run to come within five points at 48-43 with 4:47 left, but the Chucks would allow just five points during the rest of the game.

Punxsy's pressure defense didn't allow much during much of the matchup, as it constantly forced turnovers and turned those Clarion miscues into points.

Punxsy hit five three-pointers in the game, including three during the first quarter — Cressley, Triponey and Fedigan had one apiece.

Both Triponey and Weaver added a three-pointer during the third quarter, while Weaver went to the free-throw line after being fouled beyond the arc during the fourth quarter. He nailed all three foul shots.

Marion Center 61, Redbank Valley 42

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Alex Woodrow scored 28 points, and the Marion Center Stingers advanced to the Carl A. Truance Holiday Classic title game with a 61-42 victory over Redbank Valley Wednesday.

Woodrow scored 14 of his day-high 28 points during the first quarter alone. Of the five three-pointers he nailed, four came during the first quarter.

Jake Eisenhart added 14 points for Marion Center.

Leading Redbank was Brandon Bain, who scored 22 points. He managed 11 points during the second quarter and connected on five three-pointers.

The Bulldogs trailed 24-9 after the first quarter.
