Chief: Driver wouldn’t stop in 20-mile pursuit

BROOKVILLE — A Clarion woman is facing multiple charges after leading Brookville Borough Police on a nearly 20-mile pursuit Thursday afternoon along Route 322.

Police Chief Ken Dworek said the woman, who is in her mid-60s, initially did not stop for a traffic control detail along Route 322 around 4:30 p.m. Thursday.

She faces charges of driving under suspension, reckless driving, attempting to elude police and multiple other traffic citations.

Police, noticing the woman was driving a car with expired inspection stickers, attempted to pull her over — but she just
kept driving, Dworek said.

“She wouldn’t stop for the officer, and he had his lights and sirens on,” he said.

While Officer Vince Markle followed the woman for 19.5 miles, Dworek said the pursuit never turned into a chase because the woman always obeyed or drove under the speed limit.

“She just totally ignored and appeared to be oblivious to the officer following her,” Dworek said, adding he believes the woman may suffer from health issues that hampered her realization of the situation.
Because there was no high-speed pursuit, Dworek said he didn’t want police to “try to force her off the road.”

However, he said the woman failed to stop at any traffic sign along the almost 20-mile stretch, and she nearly caused an accident when she drove around stop-strips police had placed on the road.

“She was very fortunate,” Dworek said of the fact that no injuries resulted from the incident.

The woman finally stopped along Liberty Street in Clarion, though initially, she resisted police and did not want to get out of her car. Dworek said officers had to break the woman’s front and back windshields.

Police released the woman to the care of a friend and impounded her car, Dworek said.

She is likely due for arraignment today before District Judge Gregory Bazylak.

In addition to Brookville Borough Police, Clarion-based Pennsylvania State Police, the Clarion County Sheriff’s Office and Clarion Borough Police also assisted.
