Cecelia E. (Baran) Benzie, 85

Cecelia E. (Baran) Benzie, 85, formerly of Burnside, Pa., died Thursday, Feb. 14, 2013, at Jefferson Manor in Brookville.

The daughter of Stanley Baran and Catherine (Ranevitch AKA Rentovich) Baran, she was born on Nov. 22, 1927, in Valier, Pa.

Cecelia’s father came from Poland and was a veteran of World War I.

Cecelia was baptized at Ss. Cosmas and Damian in Punxsutawney on Dec. 11, 1927.

She was a graduate of the Punxsutawney High School, Class of 1945.

At the age of 17, Cecelia was awarded a Certificate of Merit to Art Instruction, Inc.

For Cecelia’s creative writing, her talents were commended with a Poetry Award of Merit in 1988 and an Outstanding Achievement in Poetry in 1990.

She was honored as a Silver Poet in 1990.

In her earlier working years, she was employed from 1945-46 at the Country Club Dairy Store in Brookville; in 1946 at Sylvania in
Brookville; and from 1946-47 at Jefferson Electric in DuBois.

Next, her working career took her to the Lorrie Shoe Factory in Rossiter, from 1950-59. She was employed there as a fancy stitcher.

On Aug. 30, 1958, Cecelia married Richard Benzie.

She became a member of the Church of the Resurrection in Glen Campbell.

She belonged to the Rosary Society for many years.

Cecelia was known for her love of cooking; baking and sewing; and her great love and affection for children and animals.

She was especially proud of her five beautiful grandchildren.

A beloved mother and grandmother, Cecelia is survived by her two children, Matthew A. Benzie and wife Diane (Buterbaugh) of Fort Dodge, Iowa, and Loralee A. (Benzie) Mennetti and husband Brian of Summerville, S.C.; and her five grandchildren, Nicholas Benzie, Kayla Mennetti, Chelsea Benzie, Bailey Mennetti and Raymond Mennetti.

Also surviving are three siblings, Elizabeth Egelski, George Baran and Mildred Zydiak and husband Paul.

Cecelia was preceded in death by her parents; her husband on May 25, 2007; her daughter, Gloria Denise Benzie, in 1960; and siblings John Popelchuck, Stanley Baran, Emily Buckvich, Anna Allen and Mary Kozlowski.

Friends will be received from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 17, 2013, at the Rairigh Funeral Home, Ltd. in Hillsdale, Pa.

A 10:30 a.m. funeral Mass will be held on Monday, Feb. 18, 2013, at the Church of the Resurrection in Glen Campbell, with the Very Rev. Lawrence L. Manchas officiating.

Interment will follow at the parish cemetery in Glen Campbell.
