Caroline Means, 95

Caroline Means, 95, Punxsutawney, formerly of Valier, died Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2011, at Jefferson Manor in Brookville.

She was born June 10, 1915, in Punxsutawney, the oldest of five children of the late Clark and Mirtie Stoke Smith.

April 28, 1937, she married Forrest M. Means, who preceded her in death July 9, 1999. They had been married 62 years.

Mrs. Means worked as an elementary school teacher for more than 20 years, retiring in 1979.

She was a member of the Valier United Methodist Church and served in many capacities over the years.

Mrs. Means enjoyed teaching, gardening, cooking, baking, traveling, music and crafts of all kinds.

Surviving relatives include four children, Richard Means and wife Brenda of Carlisle, Ruth Ann Vanderhoof of Punxsutawney, Carole Leonhardt and husband Ken of Valier, and Robert Means and wife Janice of Valier; nine grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a brother; three sisters; and a daughter, Nancy Jane Chandler.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 29, 2011, at the Valier United Methodist Church, officiated by lay-minister Eston “Shorty” Merritts.

Interment will be in the Valier Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Mrs. Means’ memory to the Valier United Methodist Church.
