Byrtha L. “Byrt” Smathers, 95, Punxsutawney, died Thursday, June 19, 2014, at Penn Highlands Healthcare, DuBois.

She was born Oct. 8, 1918, in Punxsutawney, a daughter of the late Olie and Gillen (Bastine) Amundson.

She married W. William “Bill” Smathers, on March 22, 1951. He preceded her in death on March 9, 1994.

She was the first manager of the Mahoning Towers for 23 years and retired from there at the age of 83.

She managed the YMCA and will be remembered for organizing the YAR dances in the early ‘70s.

She was also an office administrator at Amundson Brothers for 30 years.

She was honored in Washington, D.C., as Pennsylvania’s Oldest American Worker.

She will also be remembered for her ceramics and baking, especially her brownies.

She was a member of the First English Lutheran Church.

Surviving relatives include three children, daughter Dottie Smathers of Punxsutawney, and two sons, Col. William Smathers and wife Libby of Punxsutawney, and Olie Smathers and wife Jackie of Punxsutawney; nine grandchildren, Gillen Wyant, Melissa Dean, Delbert Dean III, Billy Smathers, Kris Smathers, Sara Miller, Caleb Smathers, Kyler Smathers and Lexie Smathers; six great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Dorothy Lear and Marguerite Williams.

Friends will be received from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, June 21, 2014, the Deeley Funeral Home, Punxsutawney.

A private funeral service will be held for the family.

Memorial contributions may be made, in memory of Mrs. Smathers, to the First English Lutheran Church of Punxsutawney.

Interment will be in Circle Hill Cemetery, Punxsutawney.
