NEVADA (MO) — Punxsy native Tommy Bush put together an outstanding summer season on the mound to earn 2012 National Baseball Congress World Series All- American team honors.
Bush played for the Nevada (Mo.) Griffins of the M.I.N.K. Collegiate Summer Baseball League.
The M.I.N.K. League is a summer wooden bat league for collegiate players to gain valuable experience in a minor league baseball type setting.
It is composed of eight teams in Missouri, Iowa, Nebraska and Kansas. The Griffins have seen Major League players such as long-time closer Trevor Hoffman and current Texas Rangers' second baseman Ian Kinsler as two of its alumni.
The Punxsy graduate helped Nevada reach the 2012 NBC World Series.
Bush shined in two World Series starts, during which he did not allow an earned run in 16 innings and struck out 13 batters.
He was one of five pitchers to be named to the World Series All-American team by leading all World Series pitchers with a 0.00 earned run average.
"It was a real honor to play with the guys from all-around the nation," said Bush. "It was an awesome experience to be part of the 32 teams in the World Series, as most of the teams were from Alaska, California and Colorado, mainly from the western part of the country."
Nevada's team finished seventh in the 32-team World Series field.
The Griffins were eliminated on Aug. 8th in an 11-inning loss, 5-3, to Hays Larks, which scored two runs in the top of that frame.
In 12 starts, Bush posted impressive numbers during the Nevada summer season.
Over 67 innings, the pitcher posted a 4-3 record with a 2.15 ERA and 47 strikeouts.
"It was really good for me to play in that league as it was something I needed to go into my senior year (of college)," explained Bush. "I hope to carry the success over into this season."
The season would be Bush's senior campaign with the Shippensburg (Pa.) University Raiders.
As a junior, the 6-0, 190-pound hurler recorded a 3-3 mark over 12 appearances, 11 of them starts, and a complete game.
He logged 48 innings on the mound in his appearances where he fanned 37 batters, finished with a 5.25 ERA and held opponents to a .295 batting average.
Bush is the son of Tom and Shawnee Bush of Punxsy and a supply chain management and marketing major at Shippensburg.
