Brookville dominates on track, defeats Punxsy

BROOKVILLE — Brookville's speed on the track compensated for the Punxsy girls' track and field team's power in the field during the Lady Raiders' 78-72 victory at home Tuesday.

Punxsy (1-1) was in control of nearly every field event, but the Lady Raiders (1-0) swept both the 100- and 200-meter dashes and won all three relays.

"Some things went the way we thought they would go, then other things didn't go the way we thought," Punxsy head coach Barry Young said. "Since we got swept in the sprints and lost all three relays, to even be close in the end, I was kind of shocked. Because you shouldn't be close in a meet like that."

The win helped Brookville head coach Doug Roseman get an idea of what is to come later in the year — especially in the postseason. Punxsy defeated Elk County Catholic last week, and the Lady Crusaders finished first to Brookville's second in last year's District IX Class AA Championships.

"It's the first time in quite a while that we've beaten Punxsy," Roseman said. "They're a consistent, quality program, and it's a constant guage of what to go off for the rest of the season."

Punxsy's strengths in the field came from Nickita Martz, Shannon Carpenter and Timi Shiock. Martz won the javelin (102-9) and shot put (31-0 1/2); Carpenter was victorious in the long jump (13-9) and triple jump (31-1); and Shiock had the best high jump, at 4-8.

Joining Martz and Carpenter as double-winners was Milea Schall in the distance running events. She won the 800-meter run (2:48.91) and 1,600-meter run (6:00).

Also winning running events for Punxsy were Lauren McGarvey in the 400-meter dash (65.94) and Alexis Young in the 3,200-meter run (13:14.4).

Brookville sophomore twin sisters Lanae (100- and 300-meter hurdles) and Aisha Newsome (100- and 200-meter dashes) each won two individual events on the track and also helped the Lady Raiders win the 4x100- and 4x400-meter relay races. The points those two earned, along with a 4x800 relay win and sweeps in the 100- and 200-meter dashes, counteracted Punxsy's success in the field.

"Those Newsome girls are excellent sprinters, and they have other sprinters, too," Young said. "It's not just the two Newsomes."

Punxsy's Kirsten Dean followed Carpenter by taking second in both the long jump (13-7) and triple jump (30-6). Five other second-place finishes by the Lady Chucks came from Kaitlyn Nestel (1,600 run, 6:25); Carpenter (pole vault, 7-0); Karah Hollis (high jump, 4-2); Santana Smith (discus, 74-9); and Jacque Barnett (javelin, 91-10). Aly Dickey completed a sweep for Punxsy in the triple jump after a leap of 29-11. Punxsy's other third-place marks came from Lindsey Reed (100 hurdles; Juliann Boddorf (400 dash); Keaton Mohney (300 hurdles); Alexandra Mancuso (pole vault); and Alexis Minich (shot put).

"It's a day where your third-place finishes really factor into the finish," Young said. "All in all, I thought our girls did well. They could have done better, but you can always say that. It just didn't happen."

After a snowy meet, Young is hoping better weather will follow Punxsy into its first home meet of the year, which takes place at 4 p.m. next Tuesday against St. Marys.

"We just need warm weather. It'll be real nice when we start getting this warmer weather," Young said. "Some people do perform better in warmer weather, so time will tell."
