BREAKING NEWS — Coroner, police ID man who drowned at Hemlock

August 29, 2011

ROSSITER — Both the Indiana County Coroner and Punxsutawney-based Pennsylvania State Police have identified the man whose body had been sought by numerous water rescue teams since his boat capsized Saturday afternoon on Hemlock Lake, Banks Township.

In separate reports, both Coroner Michael Baker and PSP-Punxsy said the man was identified as Gary Lynn Korney, 63, Glen Campbell.

Korney's body was difficult to find due to darkness, high winds and poor visibility, Baker said. It was discovered and removed from the lake around 8:45 a.m. Monday.

Baker pronounced Korney dead at the scene at 9:55 a.m. Monday, listing the cause of death as asphyxia due to fresh water drowning. He also ruled the death accidental.

No autopsy will be planned, and toxicology tests are pending.

Baker said Korney drowned around 3 p.m. Saturday when his small boat capsized while he was fishing with his son on Hemlock Lake, although police said the incident occurred around 3:30 p.m.

Although Korney's son was able to reach shore, neither he nor another unidentified rescuer who reportedly witnessed the accident was able to assist Korney before he slipped beneath the surface, Baker said.

Divers from the Punxsutawney Fire Department dive team, Blairsville, Falls Creek, Kittanning, Jackson/East Taylor Township, Grampian, Shippenville and Oil City/Franklin searched through the lake's murky waters.

Boats were provided by Central, Blairsville, Treasure Lake, Falls Creek, Kittanning, Hawthorne, Curwensville, New Bethlehem and Mount Pleasant.

Funeral arrangements for Korney are under the direction of the Rairigh Funeral Home Ltd., Hillsdale.
