BRADFORD — When playing a good team, you cannot expect to win by committing key turnovers for a long stretch of time in a game, such as for a whole eight-minute quarter.
After leading 15-10, the Punxsy girls’ basketball tide turned after the first quarter Friday night.
The defending District IX champion Bradford took the second quarter turnovers and converted them into points before posting a 57-43 final score at the end of the night over Punxsy in Bradford.
“In the first quarter, we played very well on both ends of the floor,” pointed out Lady Chucks head coach Randy Reitz. “In the second quarter we turned the ball over in our halfcourt sets. Bradford used the turnovers and scored four layups off it. You just can’t turn the ball over and give them layups.”
The Lady Owls took the Lady Chucks’ second-quarter gifts to open a 31-23 intermission advantage.
Bradford extended the difference to 14 points, 47-33, at the third-quarter buzzer.
The Lady Chucks played an even fourth and final period, 10-10, but could not make a dent in the deficit to fall 57-43.
“The kids played very hard and did some things well. We have to eliminate the mental mistakes against good basketball teams,” added Reitz.
On the night, Alyssa Reitz had the hot hand for the Lady Chucks. The second-year point guard downed five triples en route to a season-best 20 points.
Taylor Newcome added three triples of her own and 10 points.
Jensen Constantino and Allie Fye both chipped in four points on the inside for Punxsy.
Nicole DiPietro hit a trey for three tallies, while Emily Horner had the other bucket.
Bradford saw Ali Rinfrette post 24 points and Kaserra Owens record 19 points in its victory.
The Lady Chucks will have almost a week off to prepare for the District IX semifinals next Thursday.
Despite sweeping the season series, Punxsy will have to travel north to St. Marys for the contest. The home court determination was based on the number of total season wins. St. Marys finished 14-8 while Punxsy completed its campaign at 13-9.
Bradford (19-2) will face the semifinal winner on Saturday, March 2 at Clarion University’s Tippin Gymnasium.
The junior varsity Lady Owls edged past the Lady Chucks, 33-28.
Even though falling Friday night, Punxsy produced a 17-3 mark in junior varsity action on the season.
Hope Bridge paced the offense with nine points.
Ivy Ferko hit for six points.
Both Claire Smith and Amber Ward added four points. Emma White contributed three points, and Mikeelee Brink had one basket.View more articles in:
