Bowers bows out of states; Winter sports season closes

HERSHEY — Punxsy wrestling's Joel Bowers, a sophomore at 113 pounds, was the final active athlete in the PAHS winter sports season, as he headed to the PIAA State Wrestling Championship Tournament Thursday in Hershey.

Unfortunately for the Chucks, Bowers' season came to a close with a pair of losses at the state level Thursday.

Bowers, the northwest region's second seed, faced District X's Dalton Macri, of Canon-McMillan, in the opening round of the tournament Thursday morning.

Despite a sold 24-7 record for Bowers, Macri entered the tournament with more matches and a better overall record at 39-3.

Macri earned a 15-5 major decision over Bowers, bumping him to the consolation bracket.

The opening round of the wrestle-backs took place Thursday evening, and Bowers met Owen J. Roberts' Derek Gulotta, the third seed out of the southeast region.

Gulotta managed a fall over Bowers in :46, eliminating Bowers from the state tournament.
