Bobcats handle junior Chucks wrestlers

January 24, 2013

CLARION — After recording its first win of the season, the Punxsy junior high wrestling team could not make it two in a row on Tuesday night.

In a match of seven scoring bouts and nine forfeits, the junior Chucks garnered only two victories to drop their meeting with the Bobcats of Clarion, 49-33.

Alex Young (165) and Levi Campbell (145) picked up the pair of visiting wins. Young pinned his opponent, while Campbell won by decision.

"We didn’t perform as well as I thought we could have on the mat," said Punxsy coach Bill Burke. "We actually only won two bouts, but I think we should have won at least two or three more."

After the teams swapped a forfeit apiece, Clarion claimed the next three matches.

The Bobcats' Riley McMaster edged Zoie Smith by a narrow 2-0 decision in the 90-pound matchup. The home team received two forfeits in a row to pull in front 21-6.

The squads each added a six-point forfeit before Colton Rapp bested the Chucks' Ryan Jones, 5-1, at 122.

Following two more forfeits, Clarion's Prince Brooks added to the home advantage by shutting out Jared Weber, 11-0, for a major decision in the 138-pound meeting.

At 145, Campbell put Punxsy back in the win column. Campbell outscored Clarion's Zach Dotterer, 11-5, for the decision.

After a home decision victory, Young produced the biggest scoring highlight of the night for Punxsy. The 165-pound Young did not waste much time, as he pinned Jared Bish in 1:16.

The Bobcats added a fall in the 185 match before the Chucks' Blake Bizousky (210) and Caleb Harvey (250) were given forfeits for the 49-33 final tally.

In exhibition action, the Chucks won four of the six practice bouts.

Campbell and Stone Smith had falls. Campbell took 2:35 to secure his pin, while Stone Smith used only an even minute.

Bizousky had no trouble scoring points in his bout on his way to a 13-5 major decision over Clarion's Will Staub. Richard Waltman added a 5-1 decision in his exhibition.

The junior Chucks will be off until traveling to face the Golden Tigers of Hollidaysburg next Tuesday starting at 5 p.m.
