Betty L. Hicks, 94

April 9, 2014

Betty L. Hicks, 94, of Rochester Mills, passed away Tuesday, April 9, 2014 at Beacon Ridge in Indiana.

Mrs. Hicks was born on March 14, 1920 in Dixonville, a daughter of the late Jacob and Bessie (Sherry) Brilhart.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Jesse D. Hicks, in 1992.

Betty lived her entire life as a proud mother and avid homemaker. She and her husband were self-sustaining, raising their own sources of meat, canning a variety of vegetables from a large garden and baking the best bread in Western Pennsylvania. Her eyes would light up at the sight of a baby, and she thoroughly enjoyed all of her grand-, great- and great-great-grandchildren.

She lived independently until the age of 93. She was a woman of few words and seldom traveled, but made an impact on those she knew by her love and example.

She is survived by four sons, Jack Hicks and wife Emily of Brooksville, Fla., and Ray Hicks and wife Andrea, Budd Hicks and wife Judy and Roger Hicks and wife Sandra, all of Indiana; one daughter, Janet White of Ohio; 10 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.

All arrangements are private for immediate family and under the direction of the McCabe Funeral Home in Punxsutawney.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Please make donations in Mrs. Hicks’ name to the Covode United Methodist Church, c/o Mary Godo, 17356 Rt 119 Hgy. North, Rochester Mills, PA. 15771; or the Salvation Army, 229 W. Mahoning Street, Punxsutawney, PA. 15767.
