Betty Kathryn (Hoffman) Philliber, 97

Betty Kathryn (Hoffman) Philliber, 97, Punxsutawney, died Monday, Aug. 27, 2012, at Punxsutawney Area Hospital.

She was born Jan. 30, 1915, in Punxsutawney, a daughter of the late Orvis C. and Nancy Bell (McAnulty) Hoffman.

Nov. 15, 1941, she married Robert Spencer Philliber, who preceded her in death on Jan. 15, 1973.

Mrs. Philliber was a retired school teacher from the Punxsutawney Area School District. She also served for many years on the Board of Directors of Hoffman Diamond Products, her father’s business.

Mrs. Philliber devoted time and energy supporting her community and was very active in many organizations and activities.

She was Punxsutawney’s 2001 Woman of the Year.

She was a charter member of The Friends of the Library; past president of Chapter W of (PEO) Philanthropic Educational Order; and past president of (AAUW) American Association University Woman.

She was also a member of (DAR) Daughters of American Revolution, the Punxsutawney Area Historical and Genealogical Society, the Irving Club, the Jefferson County Chapter of (PASR) Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees and the Punxsutawney Country Club.

Mrs. Philliber loved her family and enjoyed reading, cooking, knitting and needlework.

Mrs. Philliber was a lifelong member of the Punxsutawney Presbyterian Church, where she had taught Sunday School starting with the young children’s classes, and for almost 30 years, she taught the adult Bible class.

A 1933 graduate of the Punxsutawney High School,she had the distinction of being the first woman in the Punxsutawney High School Band.

A 1937 graduate of Shippensburg University, she began her teaching career as an elementary school teacher in Allison Park, Pa.

Surviving relatives include her son, Harry A. (Butch) Philliber and daughter-in-law Sandra Jean Philliber; a son-in-law, Richard John Nikolishen; six grandchildren: Andrew R. Philliber and fiancée Dr. Nicole Drummond; Jay A. Philliber; Johanna Kate Nikolishen Garrity, wife of Christopher Garrity; Robert A. Nikolishen, married to Jeannine (Clawson); Laura Nan Nikolishen McGinty, wife of Matt McGinty; and Richard P. Nikolishen, married to Maria ( Cornetti); and four great-grandchildren, Maggie Garrity, Olivia and Liam McGinty, and Alex Nikolishen.

In addition to her husband and her parents, Mrs. Philliber was proceeded in death by her brother, Orvis C. Hoffman Jr.; a sister, Mrs. John (Louise) Hoy; and daughters Kathleen (Philliber) Nikolishen and Kristeen Philliber.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 30, 2012, at the Deeley Funeral Home, Punxsutawney.

A DAR service will be held at the funeral home at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m, Friday, Aug. 31, 2012, at the Punxsutawney Presbyterian Church with Reverend Brett Swanson officiating.
Interment will be at Circle Hill Cemetery.

The family has suggested that donations can be made to the Punxsutawney Presbyterian Church or the Punxsutawney Memorial Library.
