Bernard Eugene “Pokey” Smith, 84

Bernard Eugene “Pokey” Smith, 84, guest at the Jefferson Manor, formerly of Brookville, died Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2012, at Jefferson Manor surrounded by his family.

Mr. Smith was born Jan. 7, 1928, the son of the late Percy Parker Smith and Leona Geer Smith, in Grange, Pa.

Feb. 9, 1949, in Punxsutawney, he married Wilma Grace Pearce, who preceded him in death Oct. 13, 1998.

Mr. Smith was a World War II US Army veteran — Hq. Co. #1 Det. Ft. Jackson, S.C.

He worked as a miner and later retired as a caretaker for Deemers in Brookville.

He was a member of the Grange Church of God in Grange, Pa., and was also a member of the Red Lick Club in Brookville.

A devoted family man, he enjoyed spending time with his family, camping and playing mischievous pranks. He had a talent for small engine repair and could fix practically anything.

Surviving relatives include three daughters: Barbara Ann Steel and husband Robert of Punxsutawney, Norma Jean Demko and husband Steve of Brookville and Kathy Louise Ruth of Punxsutawney; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; several brothers-in-law; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his step-mother, Helen Louise Griffith Smith; a son, Kenneth Lee Smith; and a son-in-law, Mark Alan Ruth.

Friends will be received Friday, Oct. 12, 2012, from 2 to 9 p.m. at McKinney Funeral Home in Brookville.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 13, 2012, at the funeral home with Pastor Frank Stoner officiating.

Interment will take place at Hopewell Cemetery in Frostburg.
