Barry Stephen Kern, 60

Barry Stephen Kern, 60, of Punxsutawney, died Thursday, Aug. 30, 2012, at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital.

He was born April 6, 1952, in Quincy, Mass., a son of Robert L. and Sara A. (Jackson) Kern. They survive and reside in Cordova, Tenn.

He met his wife-to-be, Karen Denise Lockard, when she was only 16 years old; they later married on March 31, 1973, and would have celebrated their 40th anniversary in 2013. She survives.

Mr. Kern worked at Beverage Air in Brookville for 36 years.

He enjoyed being with his family, telling jokes, woodworking, being a Civil War buff and recycling everything.

He was a beloved husband and father.

In addition to his wife and parents, surviving relatives include three children, Scott Stephen Kern of Punxsutawney, Vanessa L. Duncan and husband Andrew of Punxsutawney, and Alexander M. Kern and wife Susie of Summerville; eight grandchildren; two brothers, Brian Kern and wife Lisa of Cordova, Tenn., and Randall Kern and wife Nancy of Somerville, N.J.

Friends will be received from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2012, and from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2012, at Shumaker Funeral Home, Inc., Punxsutawney.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, with Pastor Richard Mertz officiating.

Interment will follow at St. John’s Windy Hill Cemetery, Rose Township, Jefferson County.

In lieu of flowers, due to severe allergies, memorial donations may be made in Barry’s memory to the Church of the Nazarene, 108 Orchard Ave., Punxsutawney, PA 15767.
