PUNXSUTAWNEY— Three swings of the bat by Punxsy's softball team was provided nine of the Lady Chucks' softball teams 11 runs in a six-inning, mercy rule decision over District VI Hollidaysburg Monday in Punxsy.

Shawnna Crago and Ashley Barenchik both crushed grand slams with Crago's home run ending the game in the sixth. Taylor Powell also hit a home run to give Punxsy a 1-0 lead in the first.

"It was nice to see the power surge today," Punxsy coach Alan Pifer said. "I've never seen two grand slams in one game at the high school level, not have I ever seen three home runs in a game. We've hit more home runs this season so far than we did last season."

The Lady Chucks went ahead 5-0 when Barenchik hit her grand slam in the second inning.

Punxsy's Alex Magill also drove in a run on a swinging bunt that scored Janie Depp-Hutchinson. Crago held down Hollidaysburg's offense, not allowing the Lady Lions to get on the scoreboard, or have many baserunners. Hollidaysburg registered only three hits against Crago.

Pifer said the key was figuring out Hollidaysburg's pitching.

"I was a little concerned, because that's not the kind of speed we see all the time," Pifer said. "But the team made the adjustments and when they hit the ball, they hit it hard."

The win was important to help Punxsy keep pace in the race for the No. 1 seed in the District IX Class AAA playoffs. Right now, the Lady Chucks are behind St. Marys, despite Punxsy sweeping the season series.

"We have four games left this week, Bradford tomorrow, a double header Wednesday against Brookville and Altoona Thursday," Pifer said. "We need to win as many games as we can to get the bye. St. Marys has only lost three games and have 10 or 11 wins."
