Barbara A. Kennis, 63

Barbara A. Kennis, 63, of Mercer, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, May 24, 2013, at Grove City Medical Center.  

Barbara was born Dec. 1, 1949, in Kane, Pa., a daughter of George R. and Margaret (Zemlin) Jerko.

She graduated from Punxsutawney Area High School class of 1967 and cum laude from Indiana

University of Pennsylvania class of 1971.

Barbara worked 25 years as a teacher for the Mercer Area School District.

On July 18, 1970, she married her husband, Michael P. Kennis, who survives, at home.

She was a member of St. Michael Byzantine Catholic Church in Hermitage, Pa.

Barbara was very active in St. Michael Church, where she taught CCD for many years.

She was an ambassador for Punxsutawney Phil. She enjoyed crocheting, knitting, reading, collecting teddy-bears, country music and teaching.

Barbara was very devoted to her family and particularly her grandchildren.

Barbara is survived by her loving spouse, Michael; three sons, Robert B. (Deana M.) Kennis of Mercer, Pa., Ryan M. (Kimberly) Kennis of Pittsburgh and Richard C. Kennis of Gettysburg, Pa.; her mother, Margaret Jerko of Home, Pa.; two sisters, Darlene (Dave) McNeil of Indiana, Pa., and Donna (Eugene) Bowser of Punxsutawney; and four grandchildren, Riley A. Kennis, Kiley M. Kennis, Tyler E. Kennis and Hannah K. Kennis.

She was preceded in death by her father, George R. Jerko.

Friends may call from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the Stephen J. Sherman Funeral Home, 2201 Highland Rd. Hermitage, Pa.

A Parastas service will be held at 2:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

A Divine Liturgy will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 29, 2013, at St. Michael Byzantine Catholic Church, Hermitage, Pa., with Father Kevin Marks, officiating.

Panachita service will be held at 10:30 a.m. in the funeral home.

Interment will take place at the St. Michael Byzantine Catholic Cemetery.
