PUNXSUTAWNEY — A number of dogs that were apparently abandoned last weekend were rescued by area residents in the woods near Stump Creek.

Last Sunday, Punxsutawney-based Pennsylvania State Police called the Animal Hospital of Punxsutawney and asked if staff could keep a stray dog overnight, said Katelyn Hidinger, veterinarian technician at the hospital.

“By the time it was all said and done, there were 16 dogs that are being kept at the animal hospital,” Hidinger said.

The dogs that were taken in include a miniature pincher; two shih tzus; and 13 pomeranians.

All of the dogs were in bad condition, with long, overgrown toenails all the way to their paw pads, as well as feces and straw matted in their fur, when they were brought to the facility.

Hidinger said the dogs were shaved and bathed, and veterinarian Dr. Emily Rapp also administered a deworming treatment.

“Some of the dogs have bad knees and bad teeth,” Hidinger said. “The dogs had spent their entire lives in cages, with no hygiene or care for them.”

Some dogs with eye issues are being treated, and will then be spayed and neutered.

Tracy Biers of Rembier Farms is handling the adoption of the dogs. You can fill out an application on the farm’s Web site — www.rembierfarms.com.

“They won’t be available to be viewed by the public until they’ve been treated and been spayed and neutered,” Hindinger said.

The Animal Hospital is accepting monetary donations to help care for the dogs until good homes can be found, and employees are donating their services to care for the dogs.

Punxsutawney-based Pennsylvania State Police are investigating. Anyone with information should contact PSP-Punxsutawney at (814) 938-0510.
