Animal cruelty incident leaves one dog injured, another missing

September 29, 2013

NORTH MAHONING TOWNSHIP — Punxsutawney-based Pennsylvania State Police are investigating an incident of animal cruelty that occurred between 5:30 and 6:30 p.m. Sept. 13, along Route 119 north in North Mahoning Township, Indiana County.

According to police, during the above time, a known individual left a male shepherd mix named Cherokee and a male miniature pincher named Duke out of fenced areas in an attempt to deprive the owner, Lawrence August of Punxsutawney, of his dogs.

Cherokee was located Sept. 16, on Mt. Tabor Road, east of Blairsville, Indiana County.

He was picked up by Indiana County Dog Law and treated by the Indiana County Humane Society for a large, unknown type of wound on the front of his neck.

Duke has never been located. Police believe he could possibly be in the area of the Indiana/Jefferson County line, or in the same area where Cherokee was located.

Anyone with information is asked to contact August or to call PSP-Punxsy at 938-0510.

The investigation continues.
