Andrew M. Wheeler, 92, husband of Anna (Whitfield) Wheeler, formerly of Anita and Reynoldsville, died Monday, Sept. 24, 2012, at Christ the King Manor in DuBois, where he had been a resident for more than four years.
Born in DuBois on Nov. 5, 1919, he was the son of the late Andrew and Mate (Murdoch) Wheeler.
Andy retired after many years as a machinist with the National Rubber Manufacturing Company in Akron, Ohio, making parts used in the construction of tires. After retirement, he moved from his home in Salem, Ohio, to the Whitfield Farm near Anita.
He was a 32nd-Degree Mason for more than 65 years and was active in the John M. Read FAM Masonic Lodge in Reynoldsville, where he contributed to its growth. He was also a life member of the McCalmont Twp. Fire Department in Anita.
He was probably best known for his activities with his work with the Boy Scouts program. Both he and his wife earned the coveted Silver Beaver Award. He contributed his time and money for the benefit of Scouts everywhere, and particularly to the Bucktail Council.
He attended two jamobrees, which were held in Australia and Sweden, plus other more local activities. He continued his communications with friends throughout the world. He was a great contributor to the McCalmont Twp. Fire Company and enjoyed and appreciated the friendship of its members and the help he received after he was constrained in the CTK Manor. Although constrained to a wheel chair, Andy made people throughout the facility aware of his presence.
Those who knew Andy know what a strain it was for him not to be able to get out to visit his friends and travel around. He seemed to know everyone in town, and beyond, and will be missed by all who knew him.
He was preceded in death by his adopted daughter, Susan Benishek, who died in 2011.
He is survived by his adopted son, Mark Andrew Wheeler of Anita; a sister, Barbara Tucker of Benton, Texas; a brother, Norman D. Wheeler of Bally, Pa.; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
A viewing will be held on Saturday, Sept. 29, 2012, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Bernard P. Snyder Funeral Home, 206 Main St., Reynoldsville, Pa. The funeral service will commence at 1 p.m., and commitment will be at the Anita Community Cemetery following the funeral service.
