Allia Scott to represent IUP-Punxsy in Crimson Court

PUNXSUTAWNEY — While Punxsutawney Area High School had its Homecoming royalty crowned last weekend, the other campus in town — IUP-Punxsy — has just recently announced its representative for its own Homecoming, coming up this weekend, in Allia Scott of Philadelphia.

Scott will represent the first-year students' campus in what IUP calls its "Crimson Court" as a part of Homecoming 2012 activities.

"It's very exciting," Scott said Monday afternoon. "To win, I had to first be nominated, so I posted flyers and posters throughout the school. Once I got nominated, I ran around telling folks to vote for me."

IUP-Punxsy's Assistant Dean of Students Theo Turner explained how the process works for the Crimson Court.

"In terms of the process, the university (IUP) selects eight different representatives," he said. "Each person represents either their college or their specific area of study. For Miss Scott, she'll be representing the IUP-Punxsy campus, and each of the other representatives are there on behalf of their particular college on the main campus. They will make up the entire Crimson Court."

This year, four nominees were selected to run for the school's local representation.

"All of the students have the chance to vote for a student on our campus," Turner said. "We had four nominated, and she was selected by our student body."

One neat fact about Scott's nomination that she mentioned is that her nomination marks the first female representative for IUP-Punxsy since the Crimson Court has taken on this format.

Homecoming activities begin for IUP on Saturday, with a 10 a.m. parade — one that will feature the Crimson Court — kicking things off.

The parade begins at Eleventh and Philadelphia streets and travels throughout Indiana before disbanding at Oakland Avenue and Eleventh Street.

According to the IUP website, the parade will feature nearly 70 campus and community units, and the theme for this year's parade is comics.

Other events after the parade will include a Kidz Karnival and a Crimson Huddle for alumni and friends to lead up to the football game.

IUP's Homecoming game against Slippery Rock will kick off at 2 p.m., and the Crimson Court will again be recognized at halftime of the game.
