Alfred J. "Pete" Manners, 94

Alfred J. "Pete" Manners, 94, a resident of Elk Haven Nursing Home and formerly of Benezette, died on Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2013, following a lengthy illness.

He was born Oct. 28, 1918, in Punxsutawney, a son of the late William and Jessie Manners.

On May 19, 1948, in Punxsutawney, he married Ann Swanson Manners, who survives.

Pete was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during WWII in Normandy and France. He was awarded the Purple Heart for injuries received during the war. He retired from Airco Speer after more than 29 years of service. 

He enjoyed playing cards and fishing.  He was a loving and devoted family man, who greatly enjoyed spending time with his family.

In addition to his beloved wife of more than 65 years, Ann Swanson Manners, he is survived by: daughters Mary, Mrs. Francis McCarren, of Force and Ellen, Mrs. Mark Harry, of West Decatur; sons Thomas Manners and his wife Cathie, of Tennessee, Anthony Manners and his wife Rose of St. Marys, Michael Manners and his wife Robbin of Georgia and Alfred
Manners, Jr. of Georgia; 11 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and sisters Alice Hess of Punxsutawney and Emma Manners of Pennsylvania.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, David Manners, as well as numerous brothers and sisters.

Funeral services for Alfred J. "Pete" Manners will be held at the First United Methodist Church, 140 N. St. Marys Street, St. Marys, on Friday, Sept. 6, 2013,  at 1 p.m. with Pastor Tim Hoover officiating.

Military Honors will be conducted by the St. Marys Servicemen's Burial Detail.

Interment will be in the Parklawn Memorial Gardens in Ridgway.

Visitation will be at the Lynch-Green Funeral Home, 151 N. Michael St., St. Marys tonight from 6 to 8 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to Elk Haven Activity Fund, 785 Johnson-burg Rd., St. Marys, PA.
