Albert R. Gretz, 81

Mr. Albert R. Gretz, 81, of Punxsutawney, passed away Monday, Jan. 27, 2014, at Punxsutawney Area Hospital.

Al was born April 9, 1932, in Arnold, Pa., the eldest son of the late Albert R. Gretz, Sr., and Mary (Potocnak) Gretz.

On. Oct. 8, 1955, he married his loving wife, Phyllis A. (Murray) Gretz of Punxsutawney. She survives.

He was a member of Ss. Cosmas & Damian Church.

Al was a pharmacist and the co-owner of Stewart’s Drug Store in Punxsutawney.

An avid fly fisherman, he started the local Allegheny Mountain Chapter of Trout Unlimited. He was the first president and helped organize and served for two terms on the State and National Trout Unlimited Board of Directors.

Al reveled in the time he could spend outdoors in a trout stream and delighted in introducing fly fishing and fly tying to others, especially young people.

He was a member of the Elks in Punxsutawney, a lifetime member of the K of C, a member of the National Audubon Society and the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy and an avid photographer, gardener and outdoorsman.

In addition to his wife, Phyllis, Al is survived by two sons, Robert Gretz and wife Anita Baily of Overland Park, Kan., and Brian Gretz of DuBois; one daughter, Sharon Gretz Lasky and husband Joseph of Pittsburgh; one brother, Richard Gretz and wife Sybil of Michigan; and one sister, Barbara Augustine and husband Bill of Downingtown, Pa.

Additionally, he is survived by five grandchildren, Lauren Fritz and husband Tim of Chicago, Jesse Lasky and wife Michelle Brown of Brooklyn, N.Y., Caitlin Lasky of Pittsburgh, Liz Gretz of Chicago, and Luke Lasky of Pittsburgh; and three-great grandchildren, Caroline, Caleb and William.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2014, at the McCabe Funeral Home in Punxsutawney.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 30, 2014, at Ss. Cosmas & Damian Church in Punxsutawney.

Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery.
