PUNXSUTAWNEY — A win is the same result no matter if it is by 30, or a single point.
On Monday afternoon, Punxsy was happy to have enough to get past Brockway by four points, 35-31, in ninth-grade boys' hoops action in Punxsutawney.
"It was an ugly win, but a win is a win," noted Chucks head coach Todd Heigley.
Punxsy opened the affair by making one more bucket than Brockway for an 8-6 lead. The two opponents play equal in the second period, with each squad totaling seven points for a 15-13 intermission score.
The Chucks were able to claim the third quarter by four points, 11-7, to open a 26-20 advantage. The home team would need its whole lead, as Brockway won the final period, 11-9, but fell short in the end, 35-31.
"We lacked a sense of urgency. We played well in spurts on defense at the beginning of both the third and fourth quarters," said Heigley. "We missed too many offensive opportunities and shots and had very few offensive rebounds, while committing too many turnovers."
In the contest, Keeston Perry had top Punxsy scoring honors with eight points to go with a rebound and an assist.
Peyton Graham hit for seven points. Dylan Huey contributed six points, stole four passes and grabbed three boards.
Brandon Douthit chipped in five points and pulled down three caroms.
Nathan Ray added four points and a rebound. Both Tucker Jenary and Jared Manners had two points.
Braxton Giavedoni sank a free throw while having a pair of rebounds and steals.
Last Friday, the ninth-graders' comeback fell short against DuBois.
The Beavers led 17-11 at the half. Punxsy cut into the difference with a 12-10 third quarter to make it 27-23.
The Chucks knocked off one more point in the fourth quarter, 6-5, but it was not enough and they dropped a 33-29 decision.
"It was another tough loss. Â We played hard but lacked consistency on offense," explained the Punxsy coach. "Braxton (Giavedoni) and Brandon (Douthit) had nice games."
Douthit and Giavedoni combined for 18 points, 15 rebounds and four assists in the Chucks' cause. Narrowly missing a double-double, center Douthit netted 11 points to go with eight rebounds on the inside.
Giavedoni had an all-around game with seven points, seven boards and four assists.
Perry added four points, three rebounds and three steals. Huey also had four points to go with a pair of rebounds.
Ray netted two points and pulled in two boards.
Graham and Jenary posted four caroms apiece, while Manners made a free throw.
Punxsy will complete its season with a 4:15 p.m. home contest against Bradford on Friday.View more articles in:
