PUNXSUTAWNEY — Another week and another perfect outcome was the order of business for the Punxsy seventh-grade girls' basketball team.

The Lady Chucks won three of four quarters on the way to their third win of the week, 21-14 over Altoona-Maroon on Thursday afternoon in Punxsutawney.

"What a nice, hard-earned win against another quality opponent in Altoona-Maroon," said Punxsy coach Darrin Kriebel. "The girls definitely showed everybody in attendance including the visiting team just how far they've come as a team this year."

Elyse White recorded top scoring honors with seven points including a triple from the top of the key. Kylee Lingenfelter contributed five points just behind her.

Leah Miller added four points on the inside.

Kaitlyn Doverspike and Olivia Weaver completed the scorers with three and two points respectively.

Punxsy started with a close 4-2 first quarter advantage.

The home team doubled its foe in the second six minutes, 8-4, for a 12-6 halftime score.

The Lady Chucks extended their lead over the Lady Lions with a successful 7-2 third for a 19-8 tally.

Altoona-Maroon came back to edge out a 6-2 final frame but it was not enough, as Punxsy claimed its 13th win in 14 tries, 21-14.

"By far, this was definitely the best four-quarter complete -game performance (both offensively and defensively) that my team has played and shown this year," added Kriebel. "Again, the kids got the job done with hard work and hustle, two necessary components in games versus quality opponents."

Punxsy will have the weekend off before hosting DuBois at 4 p.m. on Monday.

PUNXSUTAWNEY — A three-game week is hard for any basketball team. In the third of three contests, the Punxsy eighth-grade girls came up short on the basketball court, 36-19 against the visiting Altoona-Maroon team Thursday in Punxsutawney.

Alli Lunger and Alli Ishman, who made all four of her free throws, paced the Lady Chucks (8-9) with six points apiece.

Morgan VanLeer added three of four foul shots to go with a basket for five points. Forward Kaitlyn Ray dropped a baseline jumper for the team's other two points.

"It was a nice effort against a very good ball team," commented Punxsy coach Mike Carlson. "The defense was much better this time around."

Altoona-Maroon built a first quarter lead of 13-4 and saw the advantage hold up the rest of the contest.

Punxsy edged out a 7-5 second-quarter small victory, but still trailed 18-11 at intermission.

The Lions came out strong from the locker room for a 14-4 third quarter for a commanding 32-15 tally.

The teams played to a 4-4 final-six-minutes tie for a 36-19 final score in favor of Altoona-Maroon.

"Morgan VanLeer defended very well on the point," added Carlson. "All the girls are improving each day."

The Lady Chucks will entertain the Lady Beavers of DuBois Monday for a 5:15 p.m. tip-off.
