7th- and 8th-grade squads down Brookville to stay perfect

BROOKVILLE — The 7th grade Lady Chucks' basketball team improved its record to 3-0 with an impressive 29-8 win over rival Brookville Lady Raiders Tuesday night.

"It was a team effort, we were looking for everybody and looking for the open girl. With this team it doesn't matter who scores, they're always looking to find the other person," said Punxsy coach Darrin Kriebel.

Punxsy's top scorer was Elyse White with nine points, followed by Kylee Lingenfelter with six. Kaitlyn Doverspike added four points and Leah Miller, Jordan Powell, Toya Jones, Maci Raybuck and Hannah Carmella all contributed a bucket in the win.

Victoria Boyer was the top scorer for the Lady Raiders with four, followed by Lexi Hubler and Heather McCleary, who each added two.

Brookville won the tip, but Punxsy quickly took over with a scoring barrage. Lingenfelter had the Chucks first four points, then Doverspike, White and Miller took their turns lighting up the scoreboard. White then scored again with a jump shot and Powell put in a layup to give Punxsy the 14-0 lead.

Brookville's Boyer then scored on a layup to end Punxsy's scoring run.

The Chucks were up 14-2 after one quarter of play.

Olivia Weaver stole the ball early in the second quarter and was fouled on her way to the basket. She rimmed out on both her free throws, keeping the score still at 14-2.

Brookville's Hubler scored a basket to cut the Chucks' lead to 10. Punxsy's Lingenfelter quickly responded with a bucket of her own to put the lead back at 12.

With the second quarter winding down, Punxsy's Jones stole the ball and put in a clutch lay-up to push her team's lead to 18-4.

Doverspike started the second half for Punxsy on a high note with a jumper good for two. White also found the basket again with her foul-line jump shot. White wasted no time scoring again when she nailed a triple from the top key to put her team up 25-4, which was the score at the end of the third quarter.

In the fourth quarter, Lingenfelter did some distributing when she drove to the basket and found an open Raybuck, who put it in for two.

Brookville's McCleary put in a jumper to end Punxsy's scoring run, and Boyer scored her team's final bucket of the night.

After that, Carmella laid in Punxsy's final two points to secure her team's 29-8 victory. The Lady Chucks travel to the Lady Cardinals of DCC today for a 4 p.m. tip-off.

BROOKVILLE — The 8th-grade girls basketball team followed the 7th- grade's example and bested Brookville 30-16 Tuesday night to improved to a 3-0 on the season.

Punxsy was led by a dominant performance from Morgan Van Leer, who tallied 12 points. Alli Lunger was the next high scorer with seven. Alli Ishman had five and Devon Dubensky registered four by night's end. Tessa Winebark also added a basket to round out the scoring.

"We did a really nice job defensively, offense still has a little ways to go but the defense was good," said Punxsy coach Mike Carlson.

Laken Hergert was the top contributer for the Lady Raiders with eight. Brooke Shattenberg added four and both Lindzey Oakes and Olivia Witherite scored a bucket.

Van Leer hit a corner jumper to get things started for the Lady Chucks. Lunger was the next Punxsy player to tally the scoreboard when she drove in for two. A pair of lay ups by Van Leer and Ishman put the Chucks up 8-0.

The Lady Raiders came back with a scoring run of their own. Hergert found an open Shattenberg on the fast break, and she put it in for two. Hergert added back-to-back lay ups for Brookville to cut the lead to 8-6.

Winebark opened the second quarter for Punxsy with a steal and full court lay up good for two. Van Leer then drove in on the next possession and nailed a mid-range jumper.

Brookville then struck back with a jumper from Oakes.

Dubensky and Van Leer came back with four unanswered points for the Chucks. On the next possession, Lunger got the ball underneath and was fouled to put her at the free throw line. She hit one of her two foul shots to put Punxsy up 17-8.

Brookville's Witherite then scored the final two points of the first half, and Punxsy was on top 17-10.

The third quarter opened on a high note for Punxsy with a lay-up from Dubensky and corner jumper from Van Leer.

Shattenberg scored Brookville's first points of the second half when she grabbed a rebound and put it back in.

Punxsy's Ishman received the ball near the high post, drove to basket, made the bucket and got fouled in the process. She then put in her free throw to complete the old-school three-point play.

Lunger scored again for Punxsy when she was found open off the inbound pass, then drove in for two.

Punxsy was up 26-12 entering the fourth quarter.

Brookville's Witherite dished the ball to a cutting Hergert, who laid the ball in for two for the first score of the fourth quarter. Van Leer quickly answered with a jumper to extend her team's lead back to 14.

Witherite tallied another dime when she found Shattenberg on the fast break, who scored Brookville's final bucket of the night. Lunger scored Punxsy's last basket to put her team up 30-16, giving the Lady Chucks' their third victory in a row.
