PUNXSUTAWNEY — On a nice afternoon for football, Punxsy's seventh-and eighth- grade team tackled Clarion, 27-6, from start to finish on Wednesday afternoon.
"The kids are improving and getting better each week," pointed out Chucks coach Brad Constantino. "The entire coaching staff feels the kids are going in the right direction in their growth as players."
The improvement and growth was evident from the first quarter. Punxsy's Jacob Weaver pulled in a 55-yard scoring strike from quarterback Ethan Riley to get the home team on the board, 7-0.
The Chucks added a second score in the first half when Derek Kelly rumbled 43 yards into the end zone. Kicker Joey DiPietro, who made three of four attempts, connected on his second point-after attempt for a 14-0 halftime advantage.
The Punxsy defense claimed its own score late in the third quarter. Defensive lineman Lucas Ambler sacked the Clarion quarterback as he passed the ball, and Tanner Zimmerman caught the interception and returned it four yards for the touchdown to set the score at 20-0.
Late in the fourth quarter, running back Canaan Knox ran through a big hole opened by the Chucks' offensive line for 23 yards and the final home score, making it 27-0.
"I wanted to point out Cody Verostic made some big blocks (including the one to spring Knox) on a couple scoring runs tonight," added Constantino.
The Bobcats pushed across their lone score in the final three minutes for the 27-6 final.
Punxsy will host Brookville at 4 p.m. next Wednesday.View more articles in:
