18-month-old child killed in driveway accident

SMICKSBURG — Punxsutawney-based Pennsylvania State Police reported on Friday an accidental death investigation that took place around 4:55 p.m. on Thursday at a private residence located in West Mahoning Township, Indiana County.

Police were summoned to the residence for a report of an 18-month-old female who had been struck by a vehicle in the driveway of the residence.

The report said that the investigation revealed that the child had crawled under the vehicle while the family was unloading tools.

Neither the driver nor the family members realized that the child had crawled under the vehicle, and the child was struck as the vehicle proceeded from the driveway to Route 954.

The child succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene by Indiana County Assistant Coroner Chad Dill.

State police were assisted at the scene with the investigation by the Dayton Fire Department, Citizen's Ambulance and the Indiana County Coroner's Office.

Police added that no further details will be released regarding the incident in respect of the family's privacy.
