August 26, 2011

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Punxsy's boys' golf team won its second home match of the season with a convincing 165-197 win over Brookville Friday morning at the Punxsutawney Country Club.

The match was played on the front nine holes at the course and was a varsity-only match.

Punxsy's Ian Miller was the low scorer for the tournament, shooting an even-par 37.

Miller had seven pars, bogeyed the par-three seventh and bounced back with a birdie on the par-five eighth.

MESORACO WATCH

August 26, 2011

Well, Devin Mesoraco fans, decision-day is less than a week away for the Cincinnati Reds.

The question remains whether Mesoraco will be called up when the rosters expand Thursday, or will he spend more time with the AAA-affiliate Louisville Bats polishing his game?

One encouraging sign was reported Thursday night by Danny Knobler of cbssports.com: Reds' catcher Ramon Hernandez was placed on waivers Thursday.

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The Punxsutawney girls' golf team opened its regular season Thursday afternoon at the Punxsutawney Country Club with a victory over Cranberry and Clarion, 222-236-256, respectively.

"This was the first time we've ever played Clarion and Cranberry," Punxsy head coach Katie Irwin said. "So, the girls were a little nervous, but they worked hard and pulled it off as a team. I'm very proud of them."

Each team sent six girls off the tees and counted the four lowest scores.

Punxsy looks to build off strong 2010 season

August 25, 2011

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Coming off a record-setting year, Punxsutawney's boys' soccer team has high hopes for another season to match, or even top, last year's, but there's a disadvantage to having a program with a reputation: People know you're coming.

Punxsy preparing to kick off season

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Punxsy's girls' soccer team has one week of practice and one scrimmage under its belt, but first-year head coach Kevin Hughes still has a lot to look forward to.

Just because Hughes has the first-year label tacked onto the front of his title this year, though, doesn't mean he isn't familiar with the game and Punxsy's soccer system.

Punxsy falls in opener to tough DuBois squad

August 24, 2011

DUBOIS — The Punxsutawney girls' tennis team fell in its first match of the season to what Punxsy head coach Rose Graffius said was "one of the tougher teams that we will play" in DuBois, 9-0, Wednesday afternoon.

Despite the fact that her team was unable to win any matches, Graffius still saw some promising signs from her team, which lost several of its experienced players from last season.

"Overall, I was pleased with the team's performance, considering the lack of varsity court experience that many of the girls have," she said.

Hospital hosts outing for a great cause

August 23, 2011

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Last Thursday, 108 golfers took to the course at the Country Club in Punxsutawney, but the outing was not just a friendly competition.

Though the 27 foursomes were all competing for prizes, including pro shop credit, they were also playing for a much greater cause.

For the past 32 years, Punxsutawney Area Hospital has been hosting the Dr. F.J. Trunzo Memorial Golf Outing, and this year was no exception.

The Zak Zone

Last week, I wrote about the importance of camaraderie when considering what is a sport. This week, I saw camaraderie in action as I took photos of each fall sports team preparing for its season at the Punxsutawney Area High School's media day.

Hundreds of Punxsutawney area athletes gathered sometime between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. to have their photos taken, but what goes unseen in the still shots that the camera captured is the fellowship that sports is providing.

PROSPECT — The A. J. Parise Youth Football Senior team opened its season with a 32-8 loss to the Prospect Chiefs Saturday afternoon in Prospect.

The defending league champs used two big plays early in the third quarter to turn an 8-8 contest into a 24-8 game and tacked on a fourth-quarter score to beat the Chucks in the season opener.

Punxsy opened the game with the ball, but the Chiefs defense was able to force Punxsy to punt.

Team places 4th, Miller places 3rd at Bolton

STATE COLLEGE — Punxsy's boys' golf team, led by Ian Miller, placed fourth overall with a score of 245 in the Bolton Tournament Monday in State College.

Miller shot a 76 on the 18-hole course at Penn State's Blue Course, the same course Penn State's golf team plays, except the collegiate players tee off from the black tees.

His 76 was good enough for fourth best overall behind Abington Height's Eric Montella, who took first with a 72, and Bradford's Josh Stauffer, who shot a 74.
