Varsity falls in home opener, JV picks up win

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The Punxsy girls' volleyball team lost its home opener to Ridgway in three games Tuesday night in Punxsutawney.

Ridgway jumped out to an early 16-7 lead in the first game, forcing Punxsy to take a timeout.

Punxsy bounced back after the timeout, and Chelsea Engeholm went on a serving run. By the time it was over, Punxsy trailed by just four points, 18-14.

Ridgway answered back with a run of its own, though, and went on to take the first game, 25-18.

Lady Chucks fall to Brookville

BROOKVILLE — The Punxsutawney Lady Chucks soccer squad traveled through the rain Tuesday to take on Brookville in the Lady Raiders' first game of the season. Despite a strong second half start, Punxsy gave up three goals in the second half and ultimately lost 4-1.

Punxsy head coach Kevin Hughes said there were many positives he saw throughout the game.

"I thought we possessed the ball well at times; we passed well," Hughes said. "I'm happy with the intensity most of the game, but ... we need to be moving for the full 80 minutes."

Lady Chucks make it to Slippery Rock semis

SLIPPERY ROCK — The Punxsutawney Lady Chucks volleyball squad headed to Slippery Rock Saturday to play in an all-day tournament. The Lady Chucks made it all the way to the semi-finals before being knocked off by Knoch.

The varsity squad began in pool play, playing each team to 25 twice.

It started with Karns City, which it beat 25-11 in the first game but then lost 25-21.

Lady Chucks tie for third in host tournament

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The Lady Chucks hosted a soccer tournament Saturday with Clarion, Smethport and Keystone. Punxsy tied for third with Keystone. Clarion took first place, and Smethport rounded out the tournament in second.

The Lady Chucks were beaten by Clarion 3-0, which helped Clarion to win the overall title.

"It is sometimes a struggle in a loss to take away anything positive from the situation," Punxsy head coach Kevin Hughes said. "However, in our 3-0 loss to Clarion on Saturday, a lot of great stuff happened for us."

Lady Chucks find success in Monroeville

MONROEVILLE — The Punxsy girls cross country team traveled to Monroeville on Saturday to take part in the 23rd annual Gateway Invitational, held at Boyce Park.

Hot and humid weather conditions and a difficult course made for slower race times, but overall the team came away with some satisfying results.

Chucks lose tough opener against rival DuBois, 42-7

DUBOIS — After scoring two touchdowns and leading 14-7 at halftime, DuBois' varsity football team scored 28 points in the first eight minutes of the second half to defeat Punxsy, 42-7, Friday night in DuBois.

"We missed a lot of tackles right off the bat in the second half," Punxsy head coach Alan Nichol said. "I don't think anything really changed. It was just a grind-it-out game on a hot night, and fatigue probably played a factor. Their skill definitely played a part, but I think fatigue did, too."

Brookville falls in a shootout at St. Marys

ST. MARYS — The Brookville Raiders football squad opened its season as it headed to Dutch Country Stadium Friday night to take on the St. Marys Flying Dutchmen.

The Raiders were ousted by a final score of 34-28.

Brookville's quarterback Steven Kennedy led the team with 151 passing yards and three touchdowns.

Ryan Kerr was also a standout for the Raiders, rushing for more than 130 yards and scoring a 21-yard touchdown.

Brookville head coach Chris Dworek said after the game that his team was just not quite ready for the season-opener.

Chucks prepared for opener against DuBois

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The forecast for DuBois, 7 p.m. tonight: Sunny and 78 degrees.

Perfect weather for Punxsy's opening game against the Beavers.

Punxsy head coach Alan Nichol hopes that means a good turnout to support his team on the road.

"It looks like we'll have a nice night, and we're not very far away," he said. "We have won 18 games in a row, and that doesn't happen often. There's no other sport like it where you can get that nice large crowd to come out and support you."

Punxsy sweeps Bradford in home opener

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The Punxsy girls' tennis team opened its home schedule for the 2011 season by blanking Bradford's squad, 9-0, Thursday afternoon in Punxsutawney.

In the No. 1 singles category, Punxsy's Anna Monyak handled hard-hitting Emily Hardy's serves and defeated her 6-2, 6-3 to earn Punxsy's first point in a match that contained several close games that frequently went to multiple deuces.

In the No. 2 singles, Shaina Reddinger defeated Brad-ford's Amina Sosic handily, 6-1, 6-2.

Punxsy cruises past DCC to get back in the hunt

DUBOIS — Punxsy's boys' golf team shot a 159, its lowest score of the season, at the Silver Course's back nine at Treasure Lake in DuBois, earning a 159-200 victory over DuBois Central Catholic Thursday afternoon.

Punxsy's win makes things interesting in the Allegheny Mountain League's northern division after Brookville defeated DuBois Tuesday afternoon.

"Today was a really great day," head coach Josh Conrad said after the match. "Everyone just played really well."
