May 20, 2013

CLEARFIELD — In an unusual scenario to end the season, the Punxsy junior varsity baseball squad found itself in a considerable deficit Friday.

Trailing 7-3, the JV Chucks showcased the stellar offense they have shown all season for what would be a game-deciding five-run sixth inning, before holding the Bison scoreless in the final two frames for an 8-7 season finale victory.

“What a great game; back-and-forth lead changes,” pointed out Punxsy JV head coach Rodney Thompson.

May 13, 2013

PUNXSUTAWNEY — In an afternoon which felt more like late October than mid May, the Punxsy softball team saw one of its two toughest innings of the season on Monday.

Trailing 3-2, the visiting Lady Tigers of Hollidaysburg capitalized on three Punxsy errors and added some hard hits at the plate to score 10 times to spoil "Senior Day" by a 14-4 final score.

"We lengthened it (the inning) for them. They hit the ball hard as well," noted Lady Chucks' head coach Alan Pifer. "They capitalized on everything."

Chucks put together game-deciding third inning to sweep series from Beavers

May 8, 2013

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Balls take some odd bounces and the Chucks experienced a handful of these early in the baseball game on Wednesday.

Punxsy did not let the early deficit dictate its game by putting together a game-deciding seven-run third inning to overtake rival DuBois, 10-6, in Punxsutawney.

The Chucks (11-5) victory gave them the season series sweep of the Beavers (12-4). Punxsy claimed a 3-1 road decision on April 17.

"We got some bad hops early and the ball found some holes," pointed out Punxsy head coach Mike Dickey. "All-in-all, it was a good win against a good baseball team."

Hot-playing DuBois cools off Punxsy softball

May 8, 2013

DUBOIS — It is always tough to face a team that is red hot.
This was the challenge the Punxsy softball squad had on its plate on Wednesday afternoon.

The Lady Chucks were able to take an early one-run lead before the hot-playing Lady Beavers answered with three runs and never trailed again for a 6-3 victory in DuBois.

The victory was DuBois (10-4) ninth in a row.

The Lady Beavers last defeat came at the hands of the Lady Chucks (11-4) on April 17 by a 1-0 final.

More depth takes Lady Owls past Lady Chucks, 87-63

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Talent dots the Lady Chucks track and field roster but high numbers of athletes does not.

In the final dual matchup of the spring season, visiting Bradford used its team depth to produce a close but victory nonetheless of 87-63 over Punxsy on Tuesday afternoon.

Big fifth powers Lady Chucks to season series sweep of Lady Lions

May 6, 2013

ALTOONA — It is always nice to sweep a school more than twice your size.

A big five-run fifth inning powered Punxsy over host Altoona, 7-2, to sweep the season series.

The Lady Chucks won the contest on their home field, 10-5, on April 11.

"We started out slow. We hit the ball, just didn't find holes or string any hits together until the fifth," explained Punxsy head coach Alan Pifer. "Ashley Bacha did a good job keeping us in the game until then."

Painter's two-run single pushes Punxsy past St. Marys in softball Round 2

May 2, 2013

ST. MARYS — When given an opportunity, it is important to grab it with both hands and take advantage.

Punxsy sophomore Shaina Painter took hold of her opportunity in a big way Thursday afternoon.

Leading 1-0 in the top of the sixth, Painter laced a pinch hit two-run single to triple the Lady Chucks lead to 3-0.

Punxsy would need each of those two tallies driven in by Painter as host St. Marys plated two runs in the sixth. The Lady Chucks' pitcher Ashley Bacha would give nothing more to the Lady Dutch to take Round 2 of the District IX foes, 3-2.
