Boys' golf can't weather storm in loss

September 11, 2013

PUNXSUTAWNEY— The Punxsy Chucks traveled to Indiana Country Club for a nine-hole event on Wednesday.

Unfortunately for Punxsy and Indiana, Mother Nature didn't want to cooperate.

Indiana ended up winning the lightning-delayed and shortened match 147-132.

Since the Chucks were playing a Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League (WPIAL) team in Indiana, it went by that conference's rules last night.

Both teams played six varsity golfers, but only scored five of them.

Boys' soccer drops a scorcher to DuBois

September 10, 2013

PUNXSUTAWNEY— You may not think soccer is a contact sport, and if you don't, well, you're wrong.

There is, however, no denying the conditioning that it takes to run up and down the field 80 minutes at the high school level.

With a heat index that was through the roof on Tuesday, both the DuBois Beavers and the Punxsy Chucks were struggling to battle through the scorcher.

Even the most well-conditioned athletes struggled with the humidity.

If standing outside for just a brief moment didn't make you realize it, watching Punxsy and DuBois players cramp up and even throw up did.

Boys' golf continues to win at Brockway

September 9, 2013

PUNXSUTAWNEY— The Punxsutawney Chucks continue to dominate the links.

No matter how hard you try, there is no other lede that can sum it up better.

With districts just 13 days away at Penn Hills Country Club, the Chucks wanted to continue that domination.
On Monday, the Chucks took on the Rovers of Brockway High School.

In a close match by the Chucks' standards, they were able to walk away with a 163-175 victory.

The Chucks had to battle adversity throughout the match, as Mother Nature didn't quite cooperate with the two schools.

Head coach Josh Conrad was proud of how his

There's no place like home: Punxsy defeats Union in home opener

September 6, 2013

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Fifty years ago to the day, the 1963 Punxsutawney Chucks kicked off their legendary season.

The Chucks finished the season 10-0 and became instant legends in the town.

Fifty years later, on the night of the current Chucks' home opener, the legends returned.

After a battle of attrition last week went to Brookville 25-22 in Punxsy's season opener, it's not like the Chucks needed any extra motivation.

If they did, though, they found it with the 1963 legends, who were honored at halftime.

PUNXSUTAWNEY — I would say to close your eyes for a second and imagine someone that you've always looked up to being in your presence, watching you work. But if I did that, you wouldn't be able to read The Spirit.

So let's imagine with our eyes open and our attention still on the article, shall we?

Now that you have the person or group in your head, can you imagine the butterflies that would be running through you as they watch you do what they did?

Personally, if Rick Reilly was here at 510 Pine St. and pulled up a chair beside me, I would get carpal tunnel immediately.

Girls' volleyball wins first home match

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Fresh off its opening tournament, the Lady Chucks of Punxsutawney Area High School opened up their regular season at home against Ridgway on Tuesday evening.

The Lady Chucks played a tough Knoch opponent Saturday, but like one of their warmup songs said, it was "On to the next one."
Unfortunately for Ridgway, they were the next ones.

Punxsy took the match in three straight games (25-18, 25-21, 25-8) to start the regular season 1-0.

Vroman Empire: Vroman leads Raiders to 25-22 Route 36 win

August 31, 2013

PUNXSUTAWNEY — After months of anticipation and weeks of preparation, it was finally time for some Friday night lights in Jefferson County. To make it more special for the fans of the Punxsutawney Chucks and Brookville Raiders, the much-anticipated Route 36 battle returned Friday night at Brookville High School.

Punxsy came into the game Friday night as the favorite and reigning winner of the classic battle. After losing three of the last four match
ups with the Chucks, the Raiders came in hungry to get back on top of the rivalry they've controlled in recent memory.

Route 36 rivalry resumes tonight

August 29, 2013

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Rivalries. They're one of the best, most intense happenings in the sports' world.

On any level of play, in any sport, you see these rivalries take place each year.

Michigan vs. Ohio State and Auburn vs. Alabama exemplify rivalries in major collegiate athletics. The same can be said on the hardwood with the battles that the North Carolina Tar Heels and Duke Blue Devils have
endured over the years.

The Detroit Red Wings and Colorado Avalance still have a hatred rivalry, dating back to the mid-90s and the epic playoff battles that ensued.

Chucks lose by one stroke, suffer first loss of season

August 26, 2013

PUNXSUTAWNEY — If you've ever listened to a coaches' press conference at any competitive level, you'll hear them say that they are focused on the task at hand and that each game counts the same.

A loss early in the season counts the same as a loss late in the season.

For golf, the same can be said about strokes.

In Punxsutawney's biggest match of the young season, the team found this out the hard way.

In the Route 36 battle, the Chucks dropped a highly competitive match to the Raiders of Brookville, 164-165.

Ouch.

One stroke made the difference.

Seniors lead way for boys' soccer this year

August 22, 2013

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Senior night will be special this year for the Punxsutawney Area High School boys' soccer team. Each one is special in its own way — if you were involved in an organization in high school, you understand.

But this year's team is driven by the 12th-graders.

They're the seniors who have led the program to a 15-4-1 record, a district title and a 15-5 record in three consecutive years.

You can use the Tomlinism "The standard is the standard" and "The next man is up" if you want, but the senior Chucks will be misssed both on and off the field.
