The Chucks look to even record against A-C Valley

September 19, 2013

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Can you believe that tonight marks the fourth football game of the season for Punxsutawney already?

The Chucks wasted no time kicking off their season with three enticing games.

If you ask head coach Alan Nichol, the game that his team plays each week is the most important game of the season.

It is, after all, the only game that they can focus on or control.

But the first three had a different feeling to them.

The annual Route 36 game kicked off the season, which featured the Chucks traveling to Brookville to take on their new school rival.

PUNXSUTAWNEY— In an "anything you can do, I can do better" example, the boys' golf team doesn't want to be overlooked by the girls' golf team, as both are having extraordinary seasons.

When DuBois Central Catholic came to town, the Chucks made sure that they represented the Punxsy golf program well, defeating the Cardinals 181-193.

All season long, there has been a different golfer who has stepped up to lead the team to victory in each match.

On Monday, it was Brandon Blose's turn.

Blose shot a course-low 42 on the front-nine, par-37 course.

The Angry Beavers: DuBois proves to be too much for the Chucks

PUNXSUTAWNEY — "Friday the 13th" is one of the most legendary horror movies out there. If you ask the Chucks, they probably aren't a fan.

When Punxsutawney traveled to DuBois on Friday night, they were stuck in their own horror movie, losing to the Beavers 49-7.

DuBois came out on a mission, coming off a loss to Mifflin County.
For head coach Alan Nichol, all he could do was tip his cap.

Despite intense temperatures, the Punxsy Chucks are ready for battle

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Nothing gets you ready for some Friday night football like 90 degree weather.

Wait, that's not right.

While it's not right, it's reality in Punxsutawney.

With the head index through the roof and the humidity off the charts, this week the Punxsy Chucks had a game to get ready for against the DuBois Beavers tonight.

With all of the pads and equipment that the football players wear to keep them safe, is it tempting to scale back the practices for safety reasons?

Boys' golf can't weather storm in loss

PUNXSUTAWNEY— The Punxsy Chucks traveled to Indiana Country Club for a nine-hole event on Wednesday.

Unfortunately for Punxsy and Indiana, Mother Nature didn't want to cooperate.

Indiana ended up winning the lightning-delayed and shortened match 147-132.

Since the Chucks were playing a Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League (WPIAL) team in Indiana, it went by that conference's rules last night.

Both teams played six varsity golfers, but only scored five of them.

Boys' soccer drops a scorcher to DuBois

September 10, 2013

PUNXSUTAWNEY— You may not think soccer is a contact sport, and if you don't, well, you're wrong.

There is, however, no denying the conditioning that it takes to run up and down the field 80 minutes at the high school level.

With a heat index that was through the roof on Tuesday, both the DuBois Beavers and the Punxsy Chucks were struggling to battle through the scorcher.

Even the most well-conditioned athletes struggled with the humidity.

If standing outside for just a brief moment didn't make you realize it, watching Punxsy and DuBois players cramp up and even throw up did.

Boys' golf continues to win at Brockway

September 9, 2013

PUNXSUTAWNEY— The Punxsutawney Chucks continue to dominate the links.

No matter how hard you try, there is no other lede that can sum it up better.

With districts just 13 days away at Penn Hills Country Club, the Chucks wanted to continue that domination.
On Monday, the Chucks took on the Rovers of Brockway High School.

In a close match by the Chucks' standards, they were able to walk away with a 163-175 victory.

The Chucks had to battle adversity throughout the match, as Mother Nature didn't quite cooperate with the two schools.

There's no place like home: Punxsy defeats Union in home opener

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Fifty years ago to the day, the 1963 Punxsutawney Chucks kicked off their legendary season.

The Chucks finished the season 10-0 and became instant legends in the town.

Fifty years later, on the night of the current Chucks' home opener, the legends returned.

After a battle of attrition last week went to Brookville 25-22 in Punxsy's season opener, it's not like the Chucks needed any extra motivation.

If they did, though, they found it with the 1963 legends, who were honored at halftime.

PUNXSUTAWNEY — I would say to close your eyes for a second and imagine someone that you've always looked up to being in your presence, watching you work. But if I did that, you wouldn't be able to read The Spirit.

So let's imagine with our eyes open and our attention still on the article, shall we?

Now that you have the person or group in your head, can you imagine the butterflies that would be running through you as they watch you do what they did?

Personally, if Rick Reilly was here at 510 Pine St. and pulled up a chair beside me, I would get carpal tunnel immediately.

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Fresh off its opening tournament, the Lady Chucks of Punxsutawney Area High School opened up their regular season at home against Ridgway on Tuesday evening.

The Lady Chucks played a tough Knoch opponent Saturday, but like one of their warmup songs said, it was "On to the next one."
Unfortunately for Ridgway, they were the next ones.

Punxsy took the match in three straight games (25-18, 25-21, 25-8) to start the regular season 1-0.
