Chucks weather the storm with crucial 28-12 win over C-L

October 4, 2013

STRATTANVILLE — Football and bad weather go together like peanut butter and jelly. Fortunately for the Punxsy Chucks, they have been able to avoid any poor weather so far this season. When Punxsy traveled to Clarion-Limestone Friday night, it experienced a 30-minute weather delay due to lightning. For the C-L Lions, it would just be the calm before the storm, as the Chucks ran their way to a 28-12 win to improve their record to 3-3 on the season.

Lady Chucks finish home season on top

October 2, 2013

PUNXSUTAWNEY— It's been a regular season full up ups and downs for the Lady Chucks' tennis team.

In the final home match of the season, it's only fitting that Punxsy would go out the right way to the tune of a 7-2 win over Brockway.

In their past two maches, the Lady Chucks have outscored the opposition 15-3.

Leading the way for the Lady Chucks was Amber Ward.

Ward won her No. 1 singles match 6-0, 6-0 in straight sets over Brockway's Anna Brinkley.

"[Amber] Ward's serves were on target, which helped her cruise to an easy win," head coach Rose Graffius said.

Down for the count: Bradford sweeps Punxsy

October 1, 2013

PUNXSUTAWNEY— The match between Bradford and Punxsy had a playoff atmosphere to it at Punxsutawney Area High School.

By now, you know the story.

The Lady Chucks traveled to Bradford last year during the regular season, only to get swept.

In the District IX Championship match, however, the Lady Chucks returned the favor with an epic five-game win over the Lady Owls.

In their first meeting since, Bradford took it to Punxsy, defeating the Lady Chucks in a three-game sweep, 25-9, 25-20, 25-17.

Missed it by that much: Chucks drop to 2-3 despite late rally

September 27, 2013

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Stopping Alex Feldbauer was goal No. 1 for the Punxsutawney Chucks on Friday night.

Head Coach Alan Nichol preached it to his team all week.

Feldbauer entered play with nearly 800 yards on the season for the St.
Marys Flying Dutch.

The Chucks were able to hold Feldbauer to 114 yards in Friday night's game, but unfortunately, they were unable to come away with the victory, dropping to 2-3 with a 12-6 loss.

The Chucks continue to grow at midway point

September 27, 2013

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Despite coming off a big loss at the hands of the DuBois Beavers, the Chucks were considered prohibited favorites heading into their game last week against the A-C Valley Falcons.
Whether it was the fans or the media experts, everyone thought the game against A-C Valley was supposed to be a breeze.

As the old adage goes, "That's the reason you play the game."

The Chucks held off a fiesty Falcons team for a three-point victory.

Despite what other people thought, head coach Alan Nichol said it went the way he and his team expected.

Shenkle not satisfied despite 7-0 win

September 24, 2013

PUNXSUTAWNEY — At any level, scoring seven goals in a soccer match is a rarity.

It's a strategic game in which not a lot of goals are generally scored.

So, when Punxsy walked off the field with a 7-0 victory against Curwensville, everyone had to be satisfied, no?

"No. I pulled all of the starters out in the first half because they were playing flat," head coach Phil Shenkle said. "They had no life. I yanked them all out and put in several subs and junior varsity players. We have to be able to start a game with passion, and they haven't been able to do that yet."

Poison Ivy: Phillips paces Punxsy to win

September 23, 2013

PUNXSUTAWNEY— Coming off their first loss of the season and losing arguably their best server in Shaina Painter to an undisclosed injury, the Lady Chucks have had some recent adversity to face.

There's nothing that playing at the raucous Punxsy gym can't fix.

Punxsy welcomed Marion Center into town, and quickly showed them the door, shutting the Stingers out 3-0 (25-16, 25-21, 25-12).

Ivy Phillips — an integral part of the team each match — stepped up her game with Painter's absence.

Chucks stunned by Raiders

September 19, 2013

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Sure, you know about the Pirates 20-year losing streak coming to an end this year, but did you know that the boys' golf team had a streak of its own?

The last time the Chucks lost at Punxsutawney Country Club to a District IX opponent was Sept. 18, 2006, when Brookville defeated Punxsy 160-171.
Seven years and one day later, it happened again.

The only problem is, this one cost them a berth for the AML Championship against Ridgway.

By just one stroke (174-173), the Raiders ended the streak and advanced to face Ridgway.

The Chucks look to even record against A-C Valley

September 19, 2013

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Can you believe that tonight marks the fourth football game of the season for Punxsutawney already?

The Chucks wasted no time kicking off their season with three enticing games.

If you ask head coach Alan Nichol, the game that his team plays each week is the most important game of the season.

It is, after all, the only game that they can focus on or control.

But the first three had a different feeling to them.

The annual Route 36 game kicked off the season, which featured the Chucks traveling to Brookville to take on their new school rival.
