Rivalry renewed

April 14, 2015

It was another installment of the Route 36 Rivalry on Monday — one that went quite well for Punxsy. Punxsy's baseball team used five different pitchers (including John Matthews, pictured here) to breeze past the Raiders on a windy day — 11-0 in six innings. Meanwhile, just up the road, Punxsy's softball team was handing the Lady Raiders a 9-0 defeat. For full coverage from the games, pick up Tuesday's edition of The Spirit.

Chucks hammer St. Marys to start season

April 2, 2015

Punxsy's Braxton Giavedoni (pictured here) put the exclamation point on a convincing win for the Chucks in their season opener against St. Marys when he hit a long, towering home run to cap a 20-5, four-inning mercy rule victory over the Dutch.

Punxsy's softball team didn't fare as well against the Lady Dutch, falling 6-1 in a five-inning, rain-shortened affair.

Midwest Region

The Midwest Regional final was held at Quickens Loan Arena this year. The undefeated Kentucky Wildcats came in as heavy favorites to move on to the Final Four in Indianapolis. That didn’t stop Daxter Miles of West Virginia to proclaim that Kentucky will be 36-1 after the two teams meet Thursday night. That certainly did not happen. The Wildcats completely overwhelmed the Mountaineers and doubled them up 78-39. In the early game, Notre Dame topped Wichita State 81-70. This marked the first time the Irish have reached the Elite 8 since 1979.
