Chucks double number as Young and Bowers head to states

March 4, 2013

ALTOONA — After making the trip by himself last season as the lone state qualifier, Punxsy wrestler Joel Bowers will have some company for next week’s trip across the state.

In his first season, the Chucks’ Kaleb Young not only became a state qualifier but also won the 126-pound weight class of the AAA Northwest Regional in Altoona Saturday night.

Bowers (120) matched his regional finish from a year ago when he secured a consolation final pin.

Guard pair propels Lady Owls to D-IX title over Lady Chucks

March 4, 2013

CLARION — There are usually many reasons why a team loses only two games in an entire season.

On Saturday, two of the biggest reasons were guards Keserra Owens and Ali Rinfrette, who propelled the Bradford Lady Owls to their second District IX AAA girls’ basketball title in a row with a 56-31 final score over the Punxsy Lady Chucks.

“Bradford’s two guards — Owens and Rinfrette — were the key today,” said Punxsy head coach Randy Reitz. “They played very well. Bradford is a solid basketball team.”

ALTOONA — As was the case last weekend, the Chucks' district champion duo led the team in the first night of the AAA Northwest Regional Tournament on Friday.

Top-seed Joel Bowers (120) and Kaleb Young (126) paced the Punxsy effort with a combined three wins to move into the regional semifinals held at Altoona High School.

“We had a couple big wins. We had Bowers and Young get through to the semis. It is big matches now of all or nothing,” noted Punxsy head coach Eric Eddy.

Bowers and Young grab D-IX/IV wrestling gold

February 25, 2013

CLARION — In a pair of solid, well-wrestled and exciting title bouts, the Punxsy pair of Joel Bowers and Kaleb Young grabbed District IX/IV gold on Saturday night.

The wrestlers used two very different routes to capture their top placings.

Bowers took down his 120-pound Clearfield foe in the first minute and controlled the match from that point in a 7-0 shutout.

In the 126 championship, Young, on the other hand, had to keep moving quickly to fend off Clearfield’s Dylan Graham overtime rush into his own gold-winning, point-producing takedown.

The Chucks claimed three falls in their opening three bouts and two major decisions in the next two before adding a fourth pin to begin 6-0.

Punxsy finished the preliminary and round I consolations at 7-6 and had only one wrestler not alive for the second day.

The Chucks' Joel Bowers (120) is the lone top-seed for the squad, while both Kaleb Young (126) and Perry Arrington (138) are rated second in their weight classes, respectively. For the first time, District IX will combine with District IV for AAA into one district individual championship.
