9th-grade Chucks end on high note

PUNXSUTAWNEY — After having various close contests this winter, the ninth-grade Chucks ended their season on a high note in the final game.

The season-ending victory gave Punxsy its 10th victory when it defeated Bradford, 45-30, on Friday in Punxsutawney.

After taking a 7-2 first quarter lead, the Chucks pulled away by nine points, 17-8, in the second period.

The quality second frame gave the home club a 24-10 halftime tally.

The two teams played evenly the second two periods, with Punxsy edging out a 21-20 margin.

Big comeback helps punctuate 7th-grade Chucks campaign

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The season of growth came to a head as the seventh-grade Punxsy boys’ hoops team concluded its season.

Trailing by 11 points at the half, the Chucks stormed back for a dominate second two periods and a 41-35 comeback victory over the Owls of Bradford on Friday afternoon in Punxsutawney.

Bradford stormed out to a 20-8 advantage after the first quarter and enjoyed a cushion of 16 points during the first half.

The visitors led 23-12 at intermission.

Bradford takes advantage of Punxsy miscues for victory

BRADFORD — When playing a good team, you cannot expect to win by committing key turnovers for a long stretch of time in a game, such as for a whole eight-minute quarter.

After leading 15-10, the Punxsy girls’ basketball tide turned after the first quarter Friday night.

The defending District IX champion Bradford took the second quarter turnovers and converted them into points before posting a 57-43 final score at the end of the night over Punxsy in Bradford.

Chucks hit for 50 to help Coach Neal celebrate 50th in win over Owls

PUNXSUTAWNEY — In an intense preview of the District IX AAA championship game in two weeks, the home Chucks held serve on Friday night.

With a stroke of irony, Punxsy proved to be a second-half and fourth-quarter team to hit for 50 points on head coach Dirk Neal’s 50th birthday in besting Bradford, 50-46, in Punxsutawney.

“It was beautiful,” smiled the birthday-celebrating Chucks coach. “The kids responded just like we asked. Bradford is a scrappy team. It’s getting to be a real rivalry between the two schools 90 miles apart.”

Eagles have strong finish, prevail over Chucks

PUNXSUTAWNEY — In most likely the best boys’ basketball game to date this season, the two opponents gave the Senior Night crowd an intense and hard-fought affair.

In the end, Bald Eagle Area proved its mettle with a strong finish to prevail over Punxsy, 61-53, on Wednesday night in Punxsutawney.

Leading by only two points with six minutes left, the Eagles’ center, Dennis Fisher, who had a game-high 24 points, netted the next five points and 10 of his team's final 12 points to double up the Chucks, 12-6, for the win.

Chucks take short bout from Owls

The Chucks' Eli Lambiotte controls his Redbank Valley opponent in a match from Jan. 17. Lambiotte was one of seven Punxsy wrestlers to receive forfeits from Bradford on Tuesday night. Keegan Fischer and Brandon Wingert picked up bout wins in the 53-29 victory over the Owls in Bradford. The full story detailing the match can be found in Thursday's edition of The Spirit.

9th-grade Chucks have enough to get past Rovers

PUNXSUTAWNEY — A win is the same result no matter if it is by 30, or a single point.

On Monday afternoon, Punxsy was happy to have enough to get past Brockway by four points, 35-31, in ninth-grade boys' hoops action in Punxsutawney.

"It was an ugly win, but a win is a win," noted Chucks head coach Todd Heigley.

Punxsy opened the affair by making one more bucket than Brockway for an 8-6 lead. The two opponents play equal in the second period, with each squad totaling seven points for a 15-13 intermission score.

Chucks bounce back with key road win over Keystone Panthers

KNOX — After a tough stretch of games, the Chucks were able to bounce back into the win column on Monday night.

Punxsy did what it needed to do, including using a new defense, to prevail over Keystone, 55-45.

“It was a great comeback win after being down last week and losing three games,” stressed Chucks head coach Dirk Neal. “We bounced back against a nice 14-win team in Keystone, which was in a must win game for them. The kids really hustled and did the little things they had to do to win.”

Good shooting gives Lady Chucks strong start on their way to victory

FOXBURG — When the shots are dropping, the Punxsy Lady Chucks have been winning this season.

On Monday night, the Lady Chucks started the night hitting their shots for a strong start on their way to a 59-39 victory over the host Lady Falcons of A-C Valley.

“We shot the ball very well tonight. We had good look and did a nice job running our offense,” commented Lady Chucks coach Randy Reitz.

The Punxsy director continued, “Our defense, we continued to press the ball very well and we able to get a lot of turnovers off it.”

8th-grade Chucks early surge downs Rovers

February 12, 2013

PUNXSUTAWNEY — After scoring the game's first 18 points, the eighth-grade Chucks boys' hoops team used the early surge to down the Rovers of Brockway by the same margin, 44-26, in Punxsutawney on Monday afternoon.

The Punxsy victory improved the team's season record to 12-6. The team has now won five of its past six contests, including the last four. The Monday win also gave the home team a 
measure of revenge, after dropping the second game of the year at Brockway.
