Thompson and Ford City High set to play for PIHL Open Cup 2013

NEVILLE ISLAND — When you love a sport and desire to play it to the highest level available, you will find some way to make it happen.

Punxsy Area High School sophomore Eli Thompson, with his family's support, is taking the bull by the horns, or skates to the ice in this case, to play scholastic ice hockey.

For the second year in a row through a co-op provision between high schools, Thompson is playing for and starting on Ford City High School's hockey team.

Bowers and Young grab D-IX/IV wrestling gold

CLARION — In a pair of solid, well-wrestled and exciting title bouts, the Punxsy pair of Joel Bowers and Kaleb Young grabbed District IX/IV gold on Saturday night.

The wrestlers used two very different routes to capture their top placings.

Bowers took down his 120-pound Clearfield foe in the first minute and controlled the match from that point in a 7-0 shutout.

In the 126 championship, Young, on the other hand, had to keep moving quickly to fend off Clearfield’s Dylan Graham overtime rush into his own gold-winning, point-producing takedown.

Chucks post strong first night of D-IX/IV wrestling championships

CLARION — The night session and the opening edition of the District IX/IV AAA wrestling championships started Friday, and the foes of the Chucks started to fall one after another.

Punxsy posted a strong first night of action in the district championships held at Clarion University’s Tippin Gym.

The Chucks claimed three falls in their opening three bouts and two major decisions in the next two before adding a fourth pin to begin 6-0.

Punxsy finished the preliminary and round I consolations at 7-6 and had only one wrestler not alive for the second day.

Resilient Lady Chucks storm past Lady Dutch in final five minutes

ST. MARYS — The real Punxsy Lady Chucks basketball team showed for the final five minutes of action on Thursday night.
The arrival of the Punxsy squad, which helped claim 13 wins heading into the District IX semifinal turned out to be just in the nick of time.

Trailing the entire first 27 minutes, the Lady Chucks went on an 11-3 run to take the lead and held on for an eventual 50-47 victory over the host Lady Dutch of St. Marys.

Punxsy's Josh Shuckers grapples with DuBois' Dylan Zimmerman last Thursday night in DuBois. Shuckers claimed a 4-0 shutout, and the two will have a rematch tonight in the 132-pound weight class as part of the preliminary round of bouts at the District IX/IV AAA championship. The Chucks' Joel Bowers (120) is the lone top-seed for the squad, while both Kaleb Young (126) and Perry Arrington (138) are rated second in their weight classes, respectively. For the first time, District IX will combine with District IV for AAA into one district individual championship.

Lady Raiders give everything in playoff win over Lady Berries

CLARION — The seventh-seeded Lady Raiders kept the dream of the D-IX AA title alive with a hard-fought 50-49 win over the third-seeded Lady Berries in the district playoff semifinals Thursday night at the Tippin Gym at Clarion University.

"It was 32 minutes of the hardest basketball those kids can play. When things started going south late in the game they didn't get rattled they kept their composure and we hit some big free throws late. We did enough to win," said Mark Powell, Lady Raiders varsity coach.

Lady Chucks seek 3rd 'W' of year over Lady Dutch in D-IX semis

ST. MARYS — The saying goes it is tough to beat a team three times in one year.

Tonight, the Punxsy Lady Chucks will test the saying and look to prove it wrong in their case.

After sweeping the season series in games that were not in doubt for most of the contests, Punxsy will try to best St. Marys in the District IX AAA girls' basketball semifinal.

The tip-off will be at 7 p.m. in St. Marys Area High School gymnasium.

The winner of tonight's contest will move on to face Bradford on Saturday, Mar. 2, at Clarion University at a time to be determined.

Elementary tourney wraps up with final quartet of contests

PUNXSUTAWNEY — After 12 games in three nights, the annual boys' basketball elementary tournament wrapped up with another night of quality court action.

The opening pair of contests saw a close contest before a runaway victor claimed the later fourth- and fifth-grade editions.

After leading 8-5 over the first 10 minutes of play, Alabama scored three of the four second-half points for the 11-6 win over Colorado.

For the second night in a row, Princeton was paced by Andrew Young, who netted 12 points. Young and the Tigers swept past the Ducks of Oregon, 26-7.

High-scoring early, tight late games highlight elementary hoops tournament

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The second night of the annual boys' elementary basketball tourney saw a contrast on the scoreboard.

In the two opening tilts Tuesday, the sixth-grade matchups lit up the lights in seven-point finals.

Michigan State netted 15 and 16 points in its halves and held a lead over Florida by as many as 20 points before taking the 31-24 win.

With almost as many points as the first contest, LSU bested Michigan State in each half of the second game to take away a 27-20 win.

Elementary basketball kicks off with exciting first night of games

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The future varsity stars of the Punxsy Chucks played the first night of elementary basketball games, which showcased four exciting contests.

The 4th- and 5th-graders took to the court for the first two games, with the 6th-graders closing out the final two contests.

Alabama 14, Oregon 10

The first game of the night was between the 4th/5th graders on team Alabama (red) versus Oregon (green).
