Chucks one win away from district crown

November 3, 2010

CLARION — After an emotional 4-3 victory in overtime Monday night in which the Punxsy boys' soccer team didn't play its best ball, the Chucks will face Bradford at 7:30 p.m. tonight at Clarion University's Memorial Stadium with the 2010 District IX Class AA Championship on the line.

Punxsy (15-3-1) hopes to add yet another first to a record-breaking season — a district banner.

It'll first have to get past the Owls, a squad that it hasn't played since Oct. 3, 2007, when Bradford earned a 4-3 win in double overtime in Punxsutawney.

Raiders down Rovers, advance to title game

November 3, 2010

DUBOIS — Brookville head coach Dan Smith has won his share of memorable games during his five-year run as the leader of the Raiders.

It's safe to say that Tuesday night's 2-1 win over Brockway just moved near the top of that list.

In a game that the Raiders clearly wanted to win about as much as a team could display, Brookville got the better of the Rovers after failing to beat them in two previous meetings this season during a District IX Class A semifinal playoff game at Clarion University's Memorial Stadium.

BROCKWAY — Punxsy head boys' soccer coach Phil Shenkle better nail down the copyright to Monday night's game in Brockway before someone else gets his or her hands on it.

For the third-straight meeting, the Punxsy and St. Marys boys' soccer teams played more than 80 minutes of competitive soccer that led to overtime, but this time, the Chucks were the ones celebrating at midfield.

Meterko, Baker headed to states

October 31, 2010

RIDGWAY — The Chucks may not have taken first place at this year's PIAA District IX Cross Country Championships in Ridgway Saturday afternoon, but the performances of A.J. Meterko and Dane Baker certainly qualify as a successful trip to districts.

Meterko was strong, finishing second overall while Baker took fourth to qualify for the state championships next weekend in Hershey.

Meterko's time of 17:27 made him district runner-up, while Baker clocked in with a time of 17:56.

Schall wins second-straight title

RIDGWAY — To say that the Punxsutawney girls' varsity cross country team just missed out on winning its third-straight PIAA District IX Cross Country Championship would be a vast understatement.

The Lady Chucks finished in a tie with Bradford with 30 points, but the championship went the way of the Lady Owls as Bradford's sixth runner finished four places ahead of Punxsy's sixth runner, giving Bradford the edge.

BROCKWAY – Two boys’ soccer squads that were destined to meet again will face off with a District IX Class AA Final berth on the line for the second-straight season at 7 p.m. tonight in Brockway.

The Punxsy Chucks (14-3-1), who were eliminated by St. Marys in last year’s playoffs in a shootout, enter tonight’s game coming off their best regular season in school history. The St. Marys Flying Dutchmen (13-3-2) have just as impressive of a 2010 resume, and they’re in search of advancing to yet another district championship game.

Punxsy's passing game, turnover-creating defense lead to win over Raiders

October 30, 2010

PUNXSUTAWNEY — If you can't stop the pass and turn the ball over three times in the second half, you won't win many games.

The Raiders found that out the hard way Friday night, as Punxsutawney turned a 9-6 halftime lead into a 37-6 drubbing of Brookville to not only win the Route 36 Gridiron Cup, but also claim the first-ever KSAC Large School Division championship.
