Duke to be named to Punxsy Sports Hall of Fame

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Saturday, Punxsutawney Area High School's Athletic Department will host its Punxsutawney Sports Hall of Fame Banquet and Induction Ceremony at the Punxsutawney Area High School.

In anticipation of the event, The Spirit will feature the biography of one member of the Hall of Fame Class of 2013 each day.

Today's featured athlete is Kim Duke.

Duke was a member of the Class of 2000 and was an outstanding athlete and letter winner in basketball, track and field and volleyball.

Ed Decker is a 1978 graduate and was the first football player in the history of PAHS to set a record of 1,000 yards rushing.

Lady Chucks’ bats come alive to tame Lady Lions

PUNXSUTAWNEY — As a coaching staff, it is always rewarding to see your players take your instruction and produce results on the field with them.

On Thursday afternoon, the Punxsy softball team put the instructions into motion.

The Lady Chucks’ bats came alive in the third inning to power past and tame the Lady Lions of Altoona, 10-5, in Punxsutawney.

Solid Williamsport holds Punxsy softball in check

PUNXSUTAWNEY — A solid all-around softball team is always a challenge, but even more so when a team has limited outside and game time before the matchup.

Despite being on its way to being a good softball club, Punxsy could not match the quality Williamsport squad on Saturday and dropped a close game for the majority of the day, 10-1.

“That was a good quality team over there. They have offense with the pitching to go with it,” noted Lady Chucks coach Alan Pifer. “I told the girls from the start they had to share the hitting load."

Lady Chucks win opener, Chucks cruise to second-straight win

The Lady Chucks won their opening game against Bradford in convincing fashion, and the Chucks baseball squad downed the Owl boys' squad to improve to 2-0 on the season.

Knockout Donation!

Helman's Boxing held a Golden Gloves Amateur Boxing event at the Punxsutawney Area Community Center (PACC) last Saturday night and raised $2,200 that was donated to the center.

Pictured is Rob McCoy (right), executive director of PACC, receiving the check from Alex London (left), 12, who was the winner of his 95-pound bout, which was stopped by the referee in the second round because he was dominating the match.

Helman's Boxing recently moved its practice facility into the second floor above the PACC Fitness Center in the old school board meeting room.
