BROOKVILLE — Brookville junior Brett Smith said that the Raiders could still feel the sting from their loss to Ridgway during the week leading up to their dual meet with Smethport Tuesday night in Brookville.
The team, which had expected to make a run in the state tournament, was forced to stay at home and watch.
PUNXSUTAWNEY — Defense and a career-high night by junior Alex Fedigan helped the Punxsy boys' basketball team earn a 55-42 victory over Penn Cambria Monday night that will go a long way toward solidifying a home playoff game for the Chucks.
Fedigan scored a career-best 17 points, and Punxsy held the Panthers to 21 points during the first quarter to win their eighth game this season. Punxsy not only doubled last year's win total with the victory, but it nearly clinched the No. 2 seed in the District IX Class AAA playoffs.
PUNXSUTAWNEY — Defense helped the Punxsy ninth-grade boys' basketball team top DuBois last Friday, 33-30.
Punxsy (13-4) allowed just 12 points by halftime, taking a 16-12 lead at the break before holding on for the five-point win.
"DuBois really came out and was ready to go. They played us hard the whole game," Punxsy coach Brandon Krug said. "Our offense has been struggling lately, but taking pride in our defense has given us the chance to win the past few games."
Brandon Mancuso scored a team-best 11 points, and Mike Klingensmith added eight points.
PUNXSUTAWNEY — Home-court advantage didn't mean much between the Chucks and Beavers this season.
Punxsy's lights-out shooting performance Jan. 28 in DuBois led to a 65-49 win. Friday night in Punxsutawney during Senior Night, DuBois had the hot hand, and that led to the Beavers earning a 61-50 victory.
DUBOIS — For the first time in Randy Reitz's 10-year tenure as Punxsy girls' basketball head coach, the Lady Chucks will not enter the postseason.
Punxsy — which won five-straight District IX Class AAA titles from 2001-2006 and was the district runner-up three of the next four seasons — decided to not join the playoff crowd this year prior to a 43-37 loss to DuBois Friday night.
The Lady Chucks slumped to 4-15 on the season with the defeat.
