CLARION — Punxsy senior Kody Young's 54-second pin of DuBois' Matt Bussatto during the 125-pound District IX Class AAA Individual Wrestling Championship match Saturday at Clarion University was a historic victory.
The momentous win put Young (29-2) in elite company, as he became the 25th wrestler in District IX history to finish his career as a four-time champion.
Young accomplished the feat a year after Ridgway's Garet Pisani became the 24th of that kind. Later in Saturday's Class AAA Championships, Bradford's Mark Havers became No. 26.
CLARION — Saturday won't go down as one of Punxsy's finer District IX Class AAA Individual Wrestling Championships, but the Chucks will still send eight grapplers to next weekend's regional tournament.
Punxsy head coach Eric Eddy expressed disappointment in just one district champion after the Chucks entered the tournament with four top seeds. But even if senior Kody Young was the only district winner, Punxsy will be sending more than half of its wrestlers to regionals.
CLARION — If one was to see Josh Neal during the fall and winter months the past two years, chances are he would be walking with a limp in his right leg.
The junior, who suffered a knee injury before the 2009 football season and foot injury prior to the 2010 football season, overcame the leg problems to accomplish something great Saturday at Clarion University: A berth in the regional wrestling tournament.
PUNXSUTAWNEY — Junior Carl Langley is the top seed at 160 pounds and is one of Punxsy's four heavier weights in position to advance past today's District IX Class AAA Individual Wrestling Championships in Clarion.
Langley is joined by teammates Josh Neal (171 pounds), Tige Woodson (189) and Tyler Titus (215) as the Chucks' upper weights to compete today. All three are top-three seeds, and the top-three place-winners advance to regionals next weekend in Altoona.
PUNXSUTAWNEY — Juniors Seth Spack and Nathan McGregor will enter the District IX Class AAA Individual Wrestling Championships Saturday at Clarion University as two of Punxsy's top-seeded middleweights.
Spack (25-5), who won the district title at 112 pounds last year and reached states after a runner-up finish at regionals, enters Saturday with his first-ever top-seeding. The grappler leads a 135-pound weight class that has three participants with 20-plus victories this season.
CLARION — The Brookville boys' basketball team won the same way it has all season during its District IX Class AA semifinal playoff win over Brockway Thursday night at Tippin Gymnasium at Clarion University.
The top-seeded Raiders (21-2) used timely shooting and tough defense to grind out a 49-41 win over the fourth-seeded Rovers. Brookville limited Brockway to three points in the fourth quarter.
PUNXSUTAWNEY — Three-time champion Kody Young and a trio of underclassmen embody Punxsy's lightest four weight classes entering District IX Class AAA Individual Wrestling Championships Saturday at Clarion University.
Young, a senior, will compete for a fourth district crown, while three other Chucks — sophomore Devan Snyder and freshmen Josh Schuckers and Joel Bowers — will compete in the varsity tournament for the first time.
