Chucks put together game-deciding third inning to sweep series from Beavers

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Balls take some odd bounces and the Chucks experienced a handful of these early in the baseball game on Wednesday.

Punxsy did not let the early deficit dictate its game by putting together a game-deciding seven-run third inning to overtake rival DuBois, 10-6, in Punxsutawney.

The Chucks (11-5) victory gave them the season series sweep of the Beavers (12-4). Punxsy claimed a 3-1 road decision on April 17.

"We got some bad hops early and the ball found some holes," pointed out Punxsy head coach Mike Dickey. "All-in-all, it was a good win against a good baseball team."

DUBOIS — It is always tough to face a team that is red hot.
This was the challenge the Punxsy softball squad had on its plate on Wednesday afternoon.

The Lady Chucks were able to take an early one-run lead before the hot-playing Lady Beavers answered with three runs and never trailed again for a 6-3 victory in DuBois.

The victory was DuBois (10-4) ninth in a row.

The Lady Beavers last defeat came at the hands of the Lady Chucks (11-4) on April 17 by a 1-0 final.

Chucks able to clip Owls, 80-70

PUNXSUTAWNEY — For the first time in recent seasons, Punxsy was able to defeat Bradford in a boys' track and field dual meet.

The Chucks swept the three relays and won four of the seven field events including sweeping the discus to clip the Owls, 80-70, and complete a perfect dual meet season on Senior Day for nine seniors.

The nine Punxsy seniors enjoying victory in their final home dual meet included Alex Bevak, Will Boddorf, Austin Couser, Will Harmon, Dylan Lettie, Jordan London, Zach Minich, Jesse Reichard and Nate Ward.

More depth takes Lady Owls past Lady Chucks, 87-63

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Talent dots the Lady Chucks track and field roster but high numbers of athletes does not.

In the final dual matchup of the spring season, visiting Bradford used its team depth to produce a close but victory nonetheless of 87-63 over Punxsy on Tuesday afternoon.

The six Punxsy seniors giving their utmost for their final home dual meet included Alyson Dickey, Heather Giavedoni, Aleya Hanna, Karah Hollis, Santana Smith and Alexis Young.

Big fifth powers Lady Chucks to season series sweep of Lady Lions

ALTOONA — It is always nice to sweep a school more than twice your size.

A big five-run fifth inning powered Punxsy over host Altoona, 7-2, to sweep the season series.

The Lady Chucks won the contest on their home field, 10-5, on April 11.

"We started out slow. We hit the ball, just didn't find holes or string any hits together until the fifth," explained Punxsy head coach Alan Pifer. "Ashley Bacha did a good job keeping us in the game until then."

ST. MARYS — When given an opportunity, it is important to grab it with both hands and take advantage.

Punxsy sophomore Shaina Painter took hold of her opportunity in a big way Thursday afternoon.

Leading 1-0 in the top of the sixth, Painter laced a pinch hit two-run single to triple the Lady Chucks lead to 3-0.

Punxsy would need each of those two tallies driven in by Painter as host St. Marys plated two runs in the sixth. The Lady Chucks' pitcher Ashley Bacha would give nothing more to the Lady Dutch to take Round 2 of the District IX foes, 3-2.

Lady Chucks blister Lady Owls softball

BRADFORD — A long road trip always goes faster and is much more enjoyable after a resounding victory.

The Lady Chucks blistered the host Lady Owls, 20-1 for the 15-run four-inning mercy rule in Bradford on Tuesday.

Punxsy produced four scores to open the contest before each team pushed across a single second-inning tally for a 5-1 score.

The Lady Chucks exploded for nine runs in the third before adding a decisive six more to earn the going away 20-1 win.

Punxsy (8-2) posted 15 hits coming from nine different players on the roster.

Beavers volley past Chucks in tennis

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The battling Chucks gave it a valiant effort, but a good and deep Beavers boys' tennis squad volleyed to the win, 9-0, on Tuesday in Punxsutawney.

"DuBois has an incredible program. They are solid from the top to the bottom of their roster," noted Punxsy head coach Lisa Good.

The two biggest Chucks' match highlights came at the second and fourth doubles matchups.

In the second doubles pairing, Jared Burkett and Josh Smith hung tough throughout the match and stayed tight with DuBois. The Punxsy pair took four games but fell short, 4-8.

Lady Dutch take Round 1 from Lady Chucks softball

PUNXSUTAWNEY — One game does not make a softball season.

In what could be the first of three rounds, the St. Marys Lady Dutch scored a trio of runs in the top of the fifth and held off the Punxsy Lady Chucks to take Round One, 5-2, on Thursday afternoon in Punxsutawney.

The Lady Chucks (6-2) produced four hits and plated single scores in the first and second innings for a 2-0 lead.

The home team could not put together more than one hit in an at bat over the final five innings, including none in the sixth or seventh.

Lady Chucks cruise past Lady Raiders for third shutout in a week

BROOKVILLE — A tuneup game before facing your toughest district foe is always good.

The Punxsy softball team used its Route 36 rivalry game with Brookville as preparation for Wednesday’s showdown with St. Marys by cruising to a 14-0 five-inning run-rule victory in Brookville.

“It was nice to see some girls in different positions. A lot of the girls put the bat on the ball today,” noted Punxsy head coach Alan Pifer. “We have St. Marys on Wednesday, which is a big rival and a big game for us. We will have to play well as they are one of the toughest games on our schedule.”
