Chucks lose to DuBois, finish season 6-5

May 12, 2011

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The Punxsy boys' tennis team lost its final match of the season Thursday, 5-4 in DuBois, but the Chucks completed the year with a 6-5 record, which was an improvement over last year's 4-8 mark.

Punxsy went from a 4-8 team in 2010 that had no upperclassmen to a squad that finished above .500 in 2011.

Neal homers, Depp twirls shutout, 5-0

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Randa Depp pitched her third-straight shutout, Hannah Neal hit a two-run home run, and the Punxsy softball team avenged an earlier loss when it defeated State College Thursday afternoon at Harry Noerr Field, 5-0.

"We wanted to exact a little revenge (on State College)," Punxsy manager Alan Pifer said. "We were flat over there when we played them. We were pumped up today."

Chucks blow by DCC, 16-1

May 12, 2011

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The Punxsy baseball team scored early and often to climb back to .500 with a 16-1 victory in four innings over DuBois Central Catholic Thursday at Rich Kuntz Memorial Field.

Punxsy (7-7) scored 10 times during the first two innings before it finished off the Cardinals with one run in the third and five in the fourth.

The Chucks snapped a three-game losing streak with the victory. DCC fell to 0-10 on the season.

"It was kind of workmanlike," Punxsy manager Mike Dickey said. "We did what we needed to do."

DuBois defeats Punxsy on walk-off, 4-3

May 11, 2011

DUBOIS — Twice Wednesday, the Punxsy baseball team scored the go-ahead run or runs in the top of an inning. Also twice, DuBois was there to answer soon thereafter.

Unfortunately for the Chucks, DuBois' final go-ahead runs came in the last inning, as Dom Kriner's two-run, walk-off single pushed the Beavers past Punxsy at Showers' Field in DuBois, 4-3.

DUBOIS — Wednesday's 4-1 score doesn't fully represent how close the DuBois boys' tennis team's victory over Punxsy in the District IX Class AAA Team Tournament Finals in DuBois.

After the Chucks fell behind 2-0, they won a doubles match and were ahead during the No. 1 singles and No. 2 doubles matches. Punxsy couldn't hold onto either lead and had to settle for runner-up distinction for the third time in four seasons.

Lady Raiders split doubledip with Bradford

May 11, 2011

BROOKVILLE — Senior Night was bittersweet for senior outfielder Chey Ross and the rest of Brookville softball team Wednesday afternoon in Brookville.

Ross was happy she tripled and drove in a run and helped the team win Game One 8-2, but was equally as frustrated that the Lady Raiders (3-8) fell to Bradford 15-4 in six innings in the Game Two.

"It felt really good to be able to hit and score off it, too," Ross said. "I thought the first game would be a booster. I don't know what changed (in the second game). We need to pick it up."

Lady Chucks beat Hollidaysburg, lose to Bradford on Senior Night

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The Punxsy girls' track and field team could not surmount District IX Class AAA rival Bradford, but did earn a victory over District VI Hollidaysburg during Senior Recognition Day Tuesday in Punxsutawney.

The Lady Chucks (4-5) lost to the Lady Owls, 93-57, but dominated the Lady Golden Tigers, 105 1/2-44 1/2, thanks to a great day in the field.

Knowing how talented Bradford is, Punxsy head coach Barry Young was happy with his girls and pleased with what a nice day Tuesday was after a season of rainy and cold weather.

Chucks split with Golden Tigers, Owls

May 10, 2011

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Tuesday was a bittersweet Senior Recognition Day for the Punxsy boys' track and field team, as the Chucks defeated District VI Hollidaysburg and lost to District IX Class AAA rival Bradford to conclude the regular season.

Punxsy (5-4) handled the Golden Tigers, 95-55, and was defeated by the Owls, 105-45.

The Chucks competed without distance-running senior Tom Wagner and junior Brody Morgan, who has by far been the team's finest thrower this season. Without them, Bradford earned every throwing point but one and was victorious in the 4x800-meter relay.
