Pisano tosses one-hitter, Chucks advance to another district final

May 25, 2011

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Punxsy starting pitcher Joe Pisano is flourishing at the right time.

The senior, who had a 10.70 ERA through his first 20 innings before he allowed three runs over his last 14 1/3-innings this season, was dominant Wednesday in the District IX Class AAA Semifinals against Bradford at Rich Kuntz Memorial Field in Punxsutawney.

Pisano delivered a one-hit gem during the Chucks' 10-1 victory over the Owls (5-13) to put Punxsy in position to win its eighth consecutive district title.

Dickey: Chucks focused, ready to go

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Focused was a word Punxsy first-year manager Mike Dickey constantly used Tuesday to describe the Chucks as they enter the District IX Class AAA Playoffs against Bradford.

The top-seeded Chucks have an ultimate goal of winning their eighth title in a row, but before they do that, they'll have to get past No. 4 Bradford at 4:30 p.m. today at Rich Kuntz Memorial Field in Punxsutawney.

1. I'm sure Nick Gillung, Mercyhurst College and Punxsy baseball fans are disappointed that the Lakers fell two victories shy of reaching the NCAA Division II Championship. At least he finished his collegiate career with one of his finest games last Friday — seven innings, three hits, no earned runs and 14 strikeouts.

BRADFORD — A strong finish helped the Punxsy softball team defeat Bradford, 10-3, Saturday and attain the top seed in the District IX Class AAA playoffs.

Meterko: 'I'm living the dream'

May 20, 2011

BROOKVILLE — Punxsy senior A.J. Meterko is living his dream.

Ever since he was a freshman, the Chucks' long-distance runner had the goal of running in the 1,600-meter run at states.

After his performance Thursday in Brookville during the District IX Class AAA Track and Field Championships, he'll have more to look forward to than just the 1,600.

Undefeated Blose, Pearce win doubles title

May 20, 2011

DUBOIS — No matter who they played, Punxsy junior Tim Pearce and sophomore Mike Blose weren't going to be stopped in district play this season.

The duo completed an 11-0 season with a 3-0 day Friday in DuBois to claim the 2011 District IX Class AAA Boys' Tennis Doubles Championship.

As underclassmen with six seniors on the roster, it was unclear how Pearce and Blose would fit into the 2011 Chucks' plans. But a chance doubles practice early in the season started a bond on the court between the two players.

Martz, Schall relieved by state berths

May 20, 2011

BROOKVILLE — Punxsy seniors Nickita Martz and Milea Schall felt pressure to perform for different reasons at the District IX Class AAA Track and Field Championships Thursday in Brookville.

Martz, a three-time champion in the javelin, was in search of a four-peat. Schall, who was seeded first in the 3,200-meter run, was trying to reach the state track meet for the first time ever.

Both girls accomplished their goals, and they did it by blowing away the competition.
