Rogers takes Lady Hilltoppers past Lady Chucks; Boys advance to finals

MARION CENTER — The young, aggressive Punxsy girls' hoops team clawed its way the entire contest, but fell short as Westmont-Hilltop rode Erin Rogers’ 23-point night to a 50-45 victory in the Marion Center 3rd Annual Cancer Awareness Tip-off Tournament Friday night.

The Lady Chucks pulled to within a point, 44-43, with 59 seconds remaining, but Rogers connected on all six of her free throws from there to seal the Lady Hilltoppers close win.

Varsity hoops teams tip-off at M.C. Tourney

MARION CENTER — The switching of the scholastic sports season will be complete tonight. Both Punxsy girls' and boys' varsity basketball teams don game uniforms and lace up the high tops to start the winter sports madness at the Marion Center Tip-off Tournament.

The two Chucks squads will be part again this year of the two-day, 16-team tournament down Route 119.

Tonight's four-game docket features four varsity contests and determines Saturday's eight-game slate. Starting at 4:30 p.m., A-C Valley faces West Shamokin in boys action before the local action begins.

Martin racing to success in young career

RINGGOLD — Our interests are formed early on in life to what we enjoy doing. Most times, these interests are formed and developed through our families influence naturally become ours too.

This was the case for Mayport’s Joe Martin, and his early love of local racing. The 27-year driver has turned this affection into his own racing career and growing success by the season on the FASTRAK Northeast Late Model Touring Series.

Former PAHS soccer star finishes college Rugby career

LOCK HAVEN — While in college, many like to venture out and try new things to expand their horizons. Former PAHS soccer striker, Khris Cleary, wanted to stay involved in athletics but pursued a different, much rougher route when he joined the Lock Haven rugby club team during his sophomore year at the school.

The PAHS 08' grad is weeks away from finishing his last classes at Lock Haven before he starts an internship in High Point, North Carolina in a couple of months to complete his Sports Administration degree.

In 2009, Cleary's sophomore year, he decided to join the rugby team.

Lady Chucks cheering for inaugural D-IX gold

DuBOIS — All athletic teams work hard and want their opportunity to be successful, gain notoriety and claim championships. Through the years, the high school cheerleading ranks have always seen their members work as hard on their cheers, dances, stunts and tumbles as any of the other athletic teams on campus.

In Pennsylvania, the cheerleading teams, though, were always listed as having to be consider an ‘other category’ of sport. The cheer squads never had their chance for due honors and district and state title acclaim.

Baseball road starts at 'The Rock' for Zimmerman

SLIPPERY ROCK — Every road starts somewhere. The road to ‘The Show’ has many routes, turns, stops and bumps to get to it. Punxsy has another potential ‘Big Leaguer’ ready to start his own road next fall on a not-so-distant collegiate baseball diamond.

Slippery Rock University has inked Punxsy’s Ty Zimmerman as a member of its Rock baseball team next season.

“We are excited to get him,” commented Slippery Rock’s head baseball coach Jeff Messer. “He is the first player we have had from Punxsutawney with its rich tradition of baseball players coming out of there.”

Bush's 'Monster Year' highlights Chucks football All-KSAC honorees

PUNXSUTAWNEY — In football, you have players that are the key to the team's success on offense or defense. The Punxsy football team saw one of its key players, Jamie Bush, post a "monster year" in his final one donning a Chucks uniform, on both offense and defense this fall.

The Punxsy Most Valuable Player, Bush, earned All-Keystone Shortway Athletic Conference Large School notarity at both fullback and linebacker along with teammates center Jordan London, defensive end Dan McLain, wide receiver Clayton Dale and slot back Dakota Byers.
