PUNXSUTAWNEY — Focused was a word Punxsy first-year manager Mike Dickey constantly used Tuesday to describe the Chucks as they enter the District IX Class AAA Playoffs against Bradford.
The top-seeded Chucks have an ultimate goal of winning their eighth title in a row, but before they do that, they'll have to get past No. 4 Bradford at 4:30 p.m. today at Rich Kuntz Memorial Field in Punxsutawney.
The Punxsy softball team held its annual banquet Sunday at the Eagles Club. Pictured, along with any award they may have won, are the seniors (front, from left): Kristen Fedder, co-Defensive Player of the Year; Allie Shields; Jenna Reitz; Ashley Barenchik, co-Offensive Player of the Year; Hannah Giavedoni; (back) Taylor Powell; Megan Muth, Most Improved Player; Tia Davis; Hannah Neal, co-Defensive Player of the Year; Ashley Couser; and Shawnna Crago, co-Offensive Player of the Year and co-Pitcher of the Year.
1. I'm sure Nick Gillung, Mercyhurst College and Punxsy baseball fans are disappointed that the Lakers fell two victories shy of reaching the NCAA Division II Championship. At least he finished his collegiate career with one of his finest games last Friday — seven innings, three hits, no earned runs and 14 strikeouts.
BRADFORD — The Punxsy baseball team completed a six-game, regular season-ending winning streak Saturday when it won 16-5 at Bradford. The Chucks wrapped up the No. 1 seed in the District IX Class AAA playoffs due to their successful finish to the regular season.
All four District IX Class AAA teams will enter the postseason, which begins Wednesday. Punxsy (12-7) will host Bradford (5-12) at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday at Rich Kuntz Memorial Field, and No. 2 St. Marys (10-9) will host No. 3 Clearfield (9-10) at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday.
DUBOIS — No matter who they played, Punxsy junior Tim Pearce and sophomore Mike Blose weren't going to be stopped in district play this season.
The duo completed an 11-0 season with a 3-0 day Friday in DuBois to claim the 2011 District IX Class AAA Boys' Tennis Doubles Championship.
As underclassmen with six seniors on the roster, it was unclear how Pearce and Blose would fit into the 2011 Chucks' plans. But a chance doubles practice early in the season started a bond on the court between the two players.
BROOKVILLE — Six Punxsy athletes are headed to next Friday and Saturday's state championships in Shippensburg after they won at the District IX Class AAA Track and Field Championships Thursday in Brookville.
A.J. Meterko followed through on his multiple No.1 seedings by winning both the 800- and 1,600-meter dashes.
Meterko, a senior, edged DuBois junior J.J. Clinchoc — 2:02.04 to 2:02.84 — in the 800 run and held off St. Marys junior Gideon Woelfel — 4:30.04 to 4:33.64 — in the 1,600 run.
