Federation League All-Stars shine, 12-7

June 20, 2011

HOMER CITY — A sunny Saturday evening proved to be the perfect atmosphere for the Federation League All-Stars to take down the Indiana County League (ICL) All-Stars, 12-7, in a competitive interleague game played at First Commonwealth Field in Homer City.

The Rossiter Miners sent five All-Stars to Saturday night's game: Christian Muth, Matt Gourley, Pete Meterko, Tommy Bush and Dakota Bish. Both Muth and Gourley were given the nod as starters for the Fed League. Bish entered the game in the sixth inning, while Meterko and Bush both came in during the seventh.

MESORACO WATCH

June 17, 2011

Punxsutawney's Devin Mesoraco struggled Friday night against the Toledo Mud Hens. Mesoraco, who plays for the Class AAA minor league team, the Louisville Bats, has become known as one of the heavy hitters in the International League.

Mesoraco, the 2007 first-round draft pick by the Cincinnati Reds, had a tough night Friday as he went 0-for-3 from the plate, but he was struck out just once.

During the bottom of the ninth, with the score tied at one, Mesoraco was intentionally walked by relief pitcher Matt Hoffman, negating that chance at bat.

June 16, 2011

BROOKVILLE — It was a difficult day for the Brookville Grays, as they struggled against the Rossiter Miners before eventually losing Wednesday night in Federation League play.

Brookville fell behind 5-0 in the third inning before it attempted to stage a comeback. The Grays were able to cut the lead to two with a strong third, but it proved to be not enough.

The Miners went on to win it 6-4, improving their record to 5-5, while Brookville fell to 6-4.

Brookville manager Bob McCullough said the Grays' six-day break affected his team.

The Walk Talk Ten

1. Although both the Punxsy baseball and softball teams fell a few wins short of a state title, the success of the teams they lost to year after year is astounding. The Lady Chucks lost to Valley, which just reached the state final Monday after Caitlyn Neeler threw a no-hitter during a 1-0 victory over Bellefonte in the semifinals. Neeler held Punxsy to just two hits — both by senior Kristen Fedder — during a 1-0 win. The Chucks lost 6-1 to Northern York last week, and the Polar Bears are in the final, too, after they upset undefeated WPIAL Champion Elizabeth Forward, 6-4.

Chucks' pitcher in question entering quarterfinals

June 9, 2011

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Senior right-hander Joe Pisano has proven to be the Punxsy baseball team's No. 1 pitcher this season, but entering today's PIAA Class AAA Quarterfinal game against Northern York, the Chucks may have to rely on another pitcher to send the Chucks into the state semifinals for the third time in seven years.

Who Punxsy's starter will be at 4 p.m. today at Replogle Field in New Enterprise against Northern York is up in the air, as Chucks manager Mike Dickey said Wednesday that the decision has yet to be made.
