The Walk Talk Ten

June 7, 2011

1. It was great to see Punxsutawney Groundhog Little League President Harry Noerr laughing and smiling as he talked to people at the Lady Chucks' district title game last Wednesday in Brockway. Noerr's daughter, Lisa, a 1995 PAHS graduate, passed away a few weeks ago, and I'm sure that brought much sadness to he and his extended family. For those who aren't aware, the Punxsy varsity softball and Little League softball field next to the concession stand is named Harry Noerr Field.

Lady Chucks prepared for Vikings

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The Punxsy Lady Chucks did not start to sweat when they lost an early lead and fell behind 3-2 in the third inning Wednesday in the District IX Class AAA Softball Championship.

"Go up there with confidence at the plate," senior and one of the team's leaders Shawnna Crago said she told her teammates.

The entire team stayed calm and collected, allowing the Lady Chucks to make a comeback and win it 6-4 against the St. Marys Lady Dutch. With the win, Punxsutawney (13-4) earned its fourth consecutive district title.

Chucks ready for another state title run

PUNXSUTAWNEY — When the Punxsy baseball team fell behind 2-0 in the top of the first inning and left the bases loaded in the bottom of that inning Wednesday in the District IX Class AAA Championship, no member of the Chucks panicked.

The Chucks knew they were going to hit, and by the time the team's eight-run fourth inning concluded, Punxsy was on its way to its eighth consecutive district crown thanks to a 10-5 victory over St. Marys.

MESORACO WATCH

June 4, 2011

Devin Mesoraco, a Punxsutawney native and current member of the Class AAA Louisville Bats, became best friends with doubles this week.

Mesoraco had one of his best weeks this season, as he raised his batting average to .315 with an 8-for-16 week that included five doubles and two three-hit games.

The Cincinnati Reds prospect capped the week Friday with a 3-for-3 performance that included three clutch extra-base hits and a career-tying five RBIs. He also drew a walk and was hit by a pitch.

PLAY OF THE WEEK

June 4, 2011

In a move that teammate Zak Dickey said was "so Brodi-esque," Punxsy senior Brodi Lowmaster tripped over first base as he attempted to head to second after he hit a three-run home run during the District IX Class AAA Baseball Championship Wednesday in Brockway. The homer, and subsequent slip and fall at first base, are this week's Play of the Week. Lowmaster is pictured laughing toward the Punxsy bench as he dusts himself off and trots around the bases. Schall breaks 3,200-meter run school record at state meet

May 31, 2011

SHIPPENSBURG — Punxsy senior Milea Schall couldn't avoid keeping an eye on the clock during the final lap of the 3,200-meter run at the PIAA Track and Field Championships Saturday morning in Shippensburg.

Since she was near the back of the pack in the 25-girl race, Schall didn't have thoughts of a medal in her mind.

She was in search of the school record.

"The plan was not to look at the clock, but I couldn't help it," Schall said. "I knew the first mile was pretty fast, so I thought I was going to make it. I was just pushing hard."

1. Scottie Pippen, longtime teammate of Michael Jordan, was quick to backtrack from his original comment that LeBron James "may be the greatest player to ever play the game." All of the arguments are out there: James is a better passer and rebounder, which makes him a more complete player than Jordan. Simply put, Jordan has six more rings, and until James wins four or five, he should never be in the conversation with Jordan. It doesn't matter how many rings James wins with the Heat — Dwyane Wade will always be one ring ahead.

Martz places 11th; Punxsy's 4x100 team, Meterko compete at states

May 27, 2011

SHIPPENSBURG — Punxsy senior Nickita Martz was two spots away from reaching the finals in the javelin at the PIAA Track and Field Championships Friday in Shippensburg.

Martz, who entered states as the No. 20 seed out of 27 Class AAA girls, vaulted to the top eight with her second throw of 123-10. But as the second flight came through, three girls surpassed the Punxsy senior and dropped her to 11th place, or two positions away from the finals and an opportunity at a state medal.

Pearce, Blose lose first match at states

May 27, 2011

HERSHEY — Punxsy underclassmen Tim Pearce and Mike Blose lost for the first time as a tandem this year during the PIAA Class AAA Boys' Tennis Doubles Championships Friday in Hershey.

Pearce and Blose, who improved to 11-0 on the season when they won the District IX title last week, lost to Manheim Township juniors David Musser and Andrew Moshos, 6-0, 6-2.

Punxsy head coach Todd Heigley said the experience will be great for the kids in the future. Pearce, a junior, has one season left, and Blose, a sophomore, has two.
