June 28, 2011

ST. MARYS — Joey DiPietro threw 5 1/3 scoreless innings, and Jacob Tyger hit a two-run home run during the Punxsy Little League baseball All-Stars' 5-0 tournament-opening victory Monday night at St. Marys.

DiPietro surrendered just two hits, Punxsy didn't commit an error, and Punxsy's five hits came from four players during a total team effort.

THE WALK TALK TEN

June 28, 2011

1. I didn't get a chance to mention this last week, but the teams that Punxsy's baseball and softball teams lost to in the PIAA playoffs — Northern York for baseball, Valley for softball — both won a state title. For the Lady Chucks, that's three-straight years they were eliminated by the eventual state champion, and if you count their 2006 state title game defeat, that's four times in six years. Sometimes having bad luck schedule-wise can lead to your season ending sooner than expected.

Punxsy's next game will be Thursday, but it will not know which team it will play until Tuesday. St. Marys will go on to face DuBois in the winner's bracket at 6 p.m. Tuesday in DuBois.

Punxsy takes home victory in American Legion, 14-4

June 27, 2011

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Punxsutawney reigned victorious as they beat the Clearfield Chiefs 14-4 Sunday night in American Legion ball.

A seven-run first inning proved to be just the ticket for Punxsy, as the Chiefs were unable to stage any sort of comeback.

"We jumped out quick in the first inning, and we kinda never looked back after that," Punxsy manager Mike Dickey said. "It was a good win for us. We were patient when we needed to be patient, and we were aggressive when we needed to be aggressive."

Brookville defeated St. Marys, 10-7, Sunday afternoon.

Four games will be played in the tournament this weekend, with three games featuring the hometown Miners.

MESORACO WATCH

June 25, 2011

Former Punxsutawney Area High School catcher Devin Mesoraco has become one of the top producers of doubles in the Triple-A International League, where he plays for the Louisville Bats. This week, he added four doubles to his season total.

Mesoraco's 26 doubles on the season for the Cincinnati Reds' affiliate is good enough for second in the International League, trailing Jim Gallagher of the Charlotte Knights by just one double.

Mesoraco started the week with five consecutive one-hit games, including last Saturday's 1-for-3 performance, during which he doubled and walked.

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Alli Ishman was on point all game long, and the Punxsy Little League softball All-Stars cruised to a tournament-opening 15-0 victory in four innings over Brockway Thursday night at Harry Noerr Field in Punxsutawney.

Ishman was dominant, striking out the first five batters she faced and throwing a one-hitter.
