Brookville’s Mercatoris begins Amateurs today

August 21, 2011

BROOKVILLE — The U.S. Amateur Golf Championship begins at 7 a.m. today, and Brookville’s own C.G. Mercatoris will be playing it a second time.

“It feels great,” Mercatoris said. “Anytime you can get into the U.S. Amateur, it’s probably the best amateur tournament in the country. I’m very excited.”

Mercatoris, who competed in the U.S. Amateur in 2009, is looking to build upon his successes at Robert Morris University in Pittsburgh.

As a member of the Class of 2011, Mercatoris received the Northeast Conference Men’s Golfer of the Year award.

Punxsy wins season opener over Redbank, 130-187

August 20, 2011

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Even the approaching storm couldn't stop the Punxsy boys' golf team and its opponent, Redbank, from completing the first match of the season. With each team scoring its three top players, Punxsy defeated Redbank 130-187 to earn the win at the Punxsutawney Country Club.

Redbank's squad consisted of just three players, but Punxsy was still allowed to send five onto the course and take the top three players' scores. The players each played the front nine holes at the Country Club.

Hard work has Punxsy's hopes high this year

August 19, 2011

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The 2011 Punxsutawney girls' golf team is hard at work preparing for its first tournament of the season, the Bolton Tournament in State College Aug. 22, and head coach Katie Irwin likes what she sees so far.

She also knows why she likes what she sees: Hard work by her players to prepare throughout the summer.

"I've seen a lot of work from these girls during the off-season, and it's showing now that we've turned in some scores," she said.

Punxsy lost three seniors from last year's squad, which went 14-3, but eight players will still be returning.

Teamwork is the key to Punxsy's success

August 17, 2011

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Tennis is a sport that is most often considered an individual one, except in the case of doubles, but Punxsy girls' tennis coach Rose Graffius is using the so-called individual sport to instill lessons about teamwork in her girls this year.

Entering her fourth year as Punxsy's girls' tennis coach, Graffius is optimistic about the way her girls are playing, despite limited practice so far.

Boys' golf team hopes to live up to long-standing tradition

August 17, 2011

PUNXSUTAWNEY — When the boys' golf team tees off Friday morning at the Punxsutawney Country Club, the Punxsutawney Area High School's fall sports regular season will officially be underway.

Under the leadership of fourth-year coach Josh Conrad, the Chucks hope to improve from last year when no Punxsy player made it through the first day of districts.

Conrad said his players understand that Punxsy's program has a history of success, and he feels confident they will give their all to make this year a successful one.

The Zak Zone

August 17, 2011

For as long as I can remember, there has been a debate in the sports community, among athletes and fans alike, centered around one important question: What exactly is a sport?

In high school, I knew the question existed, but I also didn't really have to consider the answer too closely. Most of my friends liked and followed the same sports I did, and so there was no room for debate.

Football? Basketball? Hockey? Baseball? There was no debate with those sports. Whether we liked to watch them or not was one question, but we each acknowledged they were all sports.

Parise Football set to kick off another season

August 16, 2011

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Right around 6 o'clock Mon- day night, the storm clouds came rolling into Punxsutawney, and as a lightning bolt flashed in the distance, approximately 75 kids ran for cover at the practice field for the A.J. Parise Youth Football program.

Fortunately, the thunder and lightning blew over, and the teams were able to begin practice just a few minutes late.

The teams, led by Dave Bosak and his volunteer coaching staffs, went through a variety of drills in preparation for their season-opening regular season games Saturday at Prospect.

Fall sports practices begin in Punxsy

August 15, 2011

PUNXSUTAWNEY — With the temperatures cooling a bit over the past several days, and the NFL preseason kicking off this past weekend, thoughts of fall are beginning to feel a bit more realistic.

With autumn comes the busiest of sports seasons for the Punxsutawney Area High School's athletic department.

Seven different sports are represented on the fall sports calendar, keeping everyone in the athletic department on their toes.

The activity is welcomed after a full summer of preparations went into planning the schedules for Punxsutawney Athletic Director Bill Vassallo and his staff.

MESORACO WATCH

August 13, 2011

Baseball is a game of slumps and streaks, and unfortunately for hometown catcher and Cincinnati Reds prospect Devin Mesoraco, the past week has been of the slump variety.

Mesoraco played in six games this week and managed just two hits in 19 at-bats.

Both the hits were home runs, though, including one against the Pittsburgh Pirates AAA-affiliate Indianapolis Indians Friday. The other came in Wednesday's game against the Toledo Mudhens.

But even with his instant offense, Mesoraco's Bats fell short in both games.

NICK GILLUNG WATCH

August 11, 2011

With former Punxsu-tawney Area High School catcher Devin Mesoraco possibly days away from a trip to the Majors, another former Punxsy player's journey to the pros is just beginning.

While Mesoraco bypassed college and started playing Minor League Baseball immediately, Gillung went on to pitch four seasons at Mercyhurst College, where he put up some impressive numbers.
