MESORACO WATCH

August 5, 2011

Over the past two weeks, former Punxsutawney Area High School catcher and current Major League Baseball top-prospect Devin Mesoraco has been through his share of ups and downs, both on the field and off.

As a top prospect in the Cincinnatti Reds' system, Mesoraco was highly desired at the MLB trade deadline, but the Reds weren't willing to deal him.

Unfortunately for Mesoraco and his fans, they weren't willing to deal any of the catchers at the Major League level to make room for Mesoraco just yet.

August 4, 2011

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The Punxsutawney Little League complex will be just as crowded this weekend as it was last weekend, and for a very similar reason.

This time, though, softball will be the sport highlighted instead of baseball, as 20 teams from across the region will play in four different age groups: Under 10, Under 12, Under 14 and Under 16.

Punxsy will be represented in three of the age brackets.

According to Punxsy manager Mike Klingensmith, his players are ready for the tournament, though they don't seem over-confident, either.

The Zak Zone

August 2, 2011

With the NFL Player's Association and the owners reaching an agreement last week and training camps and free agency already in full swing, I know that football should be the only thing on my mind. Strangely, though, the only things I can think about are baseball and softball.

Punxsy splits Monday's games, wins state tournament

Trailing 4-1, Punxsy scored nine runs in the top of the fourth inning to take a 10-4 lead.

The big inning would prove to be enough as Brycen Paulinellie pitched a complete game, allowing six runs on nine hits and striking out ten, to earn the 14-6 win.

With the win, Punxsy advanced to the state championship game against Schuylkill East today at 11 a.m. at Rich Kuntz Memorial Field.
